Beautiful Linden Wisconsin

This picture is of the east side of Main Street in the late 1800's or early 1900's during the boom time of lead mining. This is the area just south of the Cheese factory today. It is very recognizable as three of those houses still exist and are mostly unchanged. Most of the houses now have been covered with aluminum siding and look newer than they are. One was lived in by the Fralicks's one was the Thornton's in the 1970's. The water tower was on Cobb Street next to the old fire house. The water tower was built very early on as a resourse in case of a mine fire. Irronically the new water tower is on Tower Street and the old one was torn down in the 1990's. The new municipal well had problems during drilling as they went down through an old mine tunnel. Main Street changes it's name to Cobb Street right at the top of the hill. The old hotel is visible in the photo and stood where the new fire house is. Legend has it that is where Grant used to stay when making deliveries from his store in Galena, IL before the civil war. The hotel was abandoded and falling in like an old chicken house when I was a kid and the place was burned down on purpose about 1970.

This was the house of the Great Grandparents of Nahdean J. Albrecht (Descendent of Bennett Treloar). There was a lead & Zinc mine behind the house. We are not certain but We believe this is the house next to the Polar Bear Cafe. The house was used as apartments and a hotel and also known as the Blue Goose Bar at one time. Today it is a private residence. There are many Trelors in the history of Linden and some are buried in the Linden cemetery. If someone has more information about this house or if my information is incorrect please email me and I will try to update it. Thanks.
