In and around the Great Lakes region are five great warships. Each of them in some way influenced the course of human history. Here is your opportunity to learn about them.
If you are so inclined, you can find out how to board four of them.  If you are adventurous enough you could even bunk on one for the night. Feel what it was like for a lookout to peer across a vast expanse of water on a moonlit night in search of enemy destroyers, or screen the sky though the gun-sight of an anti-aircraft gun for sub-killing patrol planes.
Looking for something to do this weekend? Take yourself, or your children, on a journey back to the most desparate time in human history. Walk where partriots once tread or eat in the galley where the cream of America's young fighting men  broke bread. Even sleep in the bunk of hero.
The 20th century, without a doubt, was the
darkest century in human experience. The dead numbered in such staggering numbers, that the millions will never be fully counted.
During the death throes of the Roman Empire, the
crossbow helped to plunge the Eurasian land mass into what has become known as the dark ages. An innovation called a stirup carried the great Mongol hoard on a mounted blood bath that swept like a tidal wave of death across two continents.  As science progressed, so did humankinds capacity for destruction.
In 1914 another dark age began. The killing machines of the past would become a quaint memory in comparison to what man would achieve. War would now be fought in three dimensions on the battlefields of the gods!
"We cannot give in to terror."
--Elie Wiesel, Nobel Peace Prize 1986, holocaust survivor, scholar and author.
Through the course of the 20th century, no single industrial innovation has had as much influence as the submarine. Like manned space-craft, submarines serve at the frontier of human influence. Influence that totters between man's thirst for discovery and his propensity for violence.
  U-Boats lead civilization
into its darkest era and, ultimately, submarines lead the way back out.

Visit any three of the Fleet Boats and learn how they contributed more than any other weapon to the defeat of Japan, on a level some historians agree surpass even the atom bomb.
Germany's U-Boats, more than any other weapons system of the 20th Century, began the age of total war. From then on civilians were to be considered not only fair game in war but strategic objectives.
In both world wars, U-Boats were masters of the Atlantic until finally overcome by the Allies.

engines of destruction.
Then take the opportunity to visit one or all. The U-505 in Chicago is the only Type IX U-Boat left above the sea floor. Its kind represent the furthest reaches of the Third Reich in WW II, and the only weapon that threatened the American homeland at its own shores.
