GRAY LINE CONVERSION
An Idea for Community Development
CONVERT THE IN-CITY METRA ELECTRIC LINES
INTO A CTA LINE
- THE GRAY LINE

PRESENT METRA ELECTRIC OPERATION:
- Present METRA Operation is separate in fare structure as with other METRA Lines from CTA (you can not transfer from METRA to CTA as you can from CTA to PACE)
-Trains run only hourly or less except during rush hour
- Line constructed same as a rapid transit line (off train fare collection, High Level Platforms, Electric M.U. Cars)
- Line totally underutilized outside of rush hours
- Except during rush hours, no profits made with existing operation
- METRA as an entity assigned to direct their funds towards suburban services - in city services not within their assigned call
**********************************************************
- A rapid transit line normally costs approximately $100 million per mile to construct
- The in-city part of METRA electric (22 miles & 37 stations) would cost approximately $2.2 billion dollars to build new from scratch!
- Since physically 95% of the Gray line is operating RIGHT THIS INSTANT, the conversion from METRA to CTA would cost only $50 - $100 million
(If you are on a Kensington, Blue Island or South Chicago train right now you are on the Gray Line)

PROPOSED CTA GRAY LINE OPERATION:
-METRA Trains operated for CTA as Gray Line on South Chicago, Kensington and Blue Island lines (by METRA crews)
- Complete Inter-transfer with all other CTA L and bus lines
- Trains operated on rapid transit headways same as other CTA lines
(10 to 20 minutes off-peak,  5 to 10 minutes rush hours)
- METRA Trains to University Park (and South Shore trains to Indiana) continue to operate on a separate fare structure as they do today
- CTA fare equipment in METRA station houses and CTA customer assistance manning stations as on other CTA L lines
- CTA graphics and schedules as station visuals
