Brian Grant Paterson was born in Massachusetts in 1974, but has lived in California for most of his life.  Although he began to draw at a young age, he did not begin to pursue art seriously until he was about 20 years old.

He graduated from the California College of Arts & Crafts in 1999.  Since his graduation, he has focused on painting the human figure though his commissioned portraits and his fine art work.  Brian attained his painting techniques from studying a variety of the Great Masters' works.  His painting style has been inspired by Rembrandt, Rubens, Velazquez, Bouguereau, Sargent and Vermeer, among other realist artists.  What has been most influential is the diversity of technique within realist figurative and portrait painting.

The figures and portraits he creates are built up with layers of transparent, semi-transparent and opaque paint, giving the subject a translucent glow.  Each image is created using a variety of approaches to achieve an aesthetically engaging, and convincingly solid likeness of the subject.

Currently, Brian is available for commissions of figures, portraits and still-life.  Commissioned figures and portraits are painted approximately 80% to 100% of life size.  The canvas for a full-length figure ranges from 6' to 7.5' plus tall, depending on the composition.  Please contact Brian Grant Paterson for further information concerning commissioned artwork, or to inquire into pricing for existing artwork.
