Back Porch

While I was growing up, the back porch was
our family's traditional gathering place during
the summertime. Here we read books,
ate watermelon and spit the seeds into the yard,
husked corn and snapped string beans we had
just picked in our garden, ate our lunch (and
sometimes dinner) and generally acted like
any ordinary family...

The back porch was our entryway to the rest of our world...
the back yard, the three gardens that kept our family fed
in winter, the garage, the barn, our hills and creeks
of western Pennsylvania.

From our back porch, we left to visit family and
we met friends coming to visit...
