Because I am an American

We Jews seem to be the most confused people in the world.
First we have a big discussion about "Who is a Jew?. For several thousand years we knew who was a Jew. Certainly, our enemies had no doubts.
Now the question is: "Why should American Jews come to Israel?" For several thousand years we knew that "Next year we would be in Jerusalem" and our enemies have never wanted to know it!
Why should American Jews come on Aliyah? - because we are American and being American and being Jew, we know that Israel is more than a haven, that it is a proof of faith and that this faith is now being tested just as another faith had been tested about 140 years ago on a certain battlefield called Gettysburg.

"Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."
Several thousand years ago our fathers brought forth a new nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that God was One, that He was man's creator and therefor all men are created equal.

"Now we are engaged in a great struggle testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure"
And now - We are engaged in a great struggle testing whether that nation so conceived and so dedicated can return to nationhood in its homeland.
It is this test - whether that faith so long enduring can motivate a people to return to the land of their fathers - that the Jew of this generation is being asked to face. It is not because America has failed their dreams but on the contrary, having experienced a dream, they can bring an unbroken spirit to the service of their people.
In Israel, the Jew again became warrior and victor; statemaker and statesman. The existence of Israel has changed the image of the Jew. But this is just a beginning. There is a job of living to be done.

"It is for us, the living, rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which those who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is for us here dedicated to the great task remaining before us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us - that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause they gave the full measure of devotion, that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom and that that government of its people, for its people, by its people, shall not perish from the earth."
Who better than an American knows what it means to be among those counted and to be where it counts, Millions of Jews from America!
The world would much note and long remember this greater than Magic Carpet, this greatest hagira since the Exodus. Jews returning to the Land of their fathers not because they love America less but because they love being American and being Jew, each one a proof of faith - in an over-materialistic world.

"Give us the tired, the poor, the huddled masses yearning to be free" - and give Us the young, the strong, those knowing to be free coming. not because of persecution but because theirs is the gift of freedom that they bring.
A spirit, Godly, then would hover over the face of the earth - the re-creation of a nation!

In Israel, the Jew becomes warrior and victor, state maker and statesman. The existence of Israel changes the image of the Jew. The Jew from America brings the gift of freedom. A spirit almost godly then would hover over the face of the earth, the re-creation of a nation..
But this is just the beginning. There is a job of living to be done. Who better than an American knows what it means to be counted and who can better answer , "I was eager to be counted!
And what would it mean to America if a million Jews came on Aliyah? A loving handful in the Middle East
Of loyal compatriots
Whose loving America
Is as great as their loving Israel.

Was my father right? He didn't want us to go to Israel in 1948. "The exile was God's way of preserving the Jewish people", he said, "If all the Jews are in one place, they can all be destroyed together. Don't go!" he said. Was it only because he wanted us near him. But not only that. He really was afraid. 6,000.000 Arabs against a handful of Jews! Did we really understand what we were up against?

What would it mean to Israel
If a million Jews
Came on Aliyah?
The world would much note and long remember
This greater Magic Carpet than Yemen
This greatest hagira
Since the beginning.
One million Jews returning to the land of their fathers!
Each one, a proof of faith
In an over-materialistic world.
