         GOTHAM WEEKLY NEWS #148

         Friday 20th October 2000

*************************************************************

Sorry about the lack of GWN last week. With my new job and upcoming relocation across the US, life has been a little hectic lately. While I will try and make sure GWN appears regularly over the next few months, it may not be as “weekly” as it has been in the past. Apologies in advance for any skipped weeks, please bear with me.

As always, have a great week.

MOVIE NEWS

***********

DINI SPEAKS ABOUT BB:ROTJ DELAY

--------------------------------------------------------

The Comics2Film newsletter reports that “Paul Dini recently talked to Ain't It Cool News about the much-discussed reworking of Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. As was reported last week, the animated feature has been bumped from its originally scheduled October release to a later December release. Many sources at many websites (including Comics2Film and GWN) have reported that the delay is to allow Warner Bros. to re-edit the movie to tone down the violence.

“In his conversation with AICN, Dini confirmed that the reports were accurate and the movie is being reworked to curb the violence. Dini recently viewed the reworked version, which, according to the article, has been primarily handled by Bruce Timm. Dini told AICN that the new version still works and is said to be pleased with the new version. Quoting the article: "At one point [Dini] said that a part of him kinda wished they'd written it that way from the beginning."

“The article goes into the specifics of what is actually being cut. AICN also reports that Warner is paying attention to their online campaign, and is considering the possibility of releasing two versions of the film. However, no definitive decision has been reached at this point.”

MILLER TALKS “YEAR ONE”

------------------------------------------

Fabio2’s Batcave website (http://homepages.go.com/~fabio2_batcave/main2.html) reports that

Frank Miller has finally commented a little about his upcoming work on BATMAN: YEAR ONE, alongside writer/director Darren Aronofsky

"'Darren and I had a lot of fun working together on the RONIN movie project,'
Miller said. 'We make a good team, I think... Darren in particular wanted to
make YEAR ONE.'

Despite the praise the choice of him as scripter has gotten among fans, Miller warned of possible disappointments ahead. 'The movie business is wild. There's so much money involved, and so many people, that anything can happen. Maybe Darren and I will set the world on fire. Maybe our script will wind up sitting next to all the other could-have-beens that litter the shelves of studio execs. I'm certain we can do a good job -- but anybody who isn't financing his own movie himself is foolish to predict his fate -- or his involvement in it.'

Miller concluded 'I expect to have a lot of fun with YEAR ONE,' he said. 'From the get go, I see many things that need changing -- but ultimately even if the movie gets made, mine will only be one of many voices calling the shots. I'll bring my very best efforts to the script. I won't write a single line I don't believe in.'"

HOLY SQUAD CAR! `BATMAN' IS ARRESTED

----------------------------------

By Mark Shuman

From the Chicago Tribune:

September 27, 2000

For once, police nabbed a caped crusader on the wrong side of the law.

Carpentersville police received a report of a man dressed as Batman who was disrupting traffic as the afternoon rush hour began Monday near Main and Washington Streets. A friend of the man was videotaping the antics, police said.

"People were honking," said Jim Wolfram, who was outside painting a soon-to-open boutique near the intersection. "I guess he scared a couple of people, but basically this was a kid goofing around."

Police identified Batman as Rey Swain, 19, of the 100 block of South Washington Street. Witnesses said police told him to stop his performance and left.

The police later learned that Swain was wanted by Kane County authorities on an outstanding warrant for alleged possession of drug paraphernalia, police said. He was arrested at his home.

Swain posted 10 percent of his $2,000 bond and was assigned an Oct. 18 court date, police said.
