         Friday 22nd September 2000

*** THIS ISSUE OF GWN IS DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF

*** CHIC STONE (1923 – 2000) ***

GWN found out over the last few weeks that Golden and Silver Age artist and inker, Chic Stone died July 28th of cancer in Prattville Alabhama.

Born in New York he always wanted to be a cartoonist and at age 16 landed a job with Wil Eisner’s studio. He left comics in the 1950s to work for various magazines, returning in the early 60s to work at DC where he drew the BATMAN title before moving on to Marvel where he inked many notable Stan Lee / Jack Kirby tales.

CLEARING THE BAT-CAVE

======================

A change in my day job means that I will be relocating early next year. Between now and then I will be cleaning up my collection by selling duplicates and excess items. First off I’m selling off a lot of non-Batman related stuff (comics, trading cards etc.), but there will be some Bat-stuff to follow over the next few weeks. Check out what’s for sale on eBay by searching for SellerID ajp@toad.net

As always, have a great week.

BRUCE WAYNE SCRIPT REVIEWED

---------------------------

A review of the dead in the water “young Bruce Wayne” TV show as appeared on the web at http://filmforce.ign.com/news/1391.html. It makes interesting reading, and gives a hint of just what might have been..

MOVIE NEWS

***********

BATMAN: YEAR ONE – GETS GREEN LIGHT ?

-------------------------------------

Reuters and Variety are both reporting that Warner Bros. Have officially hired director Darren Aronofsky, to direct the next BATMAN feature film and it will be Batman: Year One. The reports say Aronofsky will “develop the screenplay with noted comic book artist Frank Miller, who authored the original Year one graphic novel(sic).“

OR DOES IT ?

------------

However Comics2Film indicates that “reports on Fabio2's The Batcave (http://www.fabio2.zzn.com/)indicate that Warner Bros. may be moving away from Year One as a concept for Batman 5 and instead may be gravitating back to a traditional sequel. Batcave's sources claim that the story of Bruce Wayne starting out as Batman may seem too similar to the story of Terry McGinnis starting out as the next generation Batman in the recently announced Batman Beyond movie. One idea is to have the Batman 5 movie some how set up the Beyond concept. This is an unconfirmed report of insider talk, so no direction is set in stone yet.

A later report from The Batcave alleges that screenwriters James DeMonaco and Kevin Fox may have been instructed to start thinking about a non-Year-One sequel. One story idea would use the Scarecrow and the Ventriloquist as villains. As with the previous report, it is emphasized that this is unconfirmed talk, and a Year One movie may still be a possibility.”

BUT NO PITT !

--------------

Brad Pitt's agent announced through Access Hollywood that the actor would not be in BATMAN V. "The role of Batman is nowhere on his radar," the agent said.

BEYOND MOVIE SPECULATION

---------------------------

The BATMAN: DEFENDER OF GOTHAM (www.fandom.com/batman )site posted the latest update on the Bat projects -: "Through a source from Warner Bros. it looks like with an impending actors strike on the horizon there is a major push forward to make the Batman Beyond movie before this occurs but the source goes on to say if there is no script and actors chosen by the third week in December and the strike actually happens it`ll not be possible to make it in time.

From the BTAS Newsletter  comes news that “apparently Freddie Prinze, Jr., is vying for the role of Terry McGinnis in the live-action BATMAN BEYOND movie (this, after he was unable to hang onto the role of Spiderman in that OTHER superhero movie being made). Nic Cage is also said to be interested in the role of Derek Powers/Blight.”
