A land blessed with snow-bound peaks, lofty mountains

rich water resources. The surrounding region yields abundant
grain
and has extensive forests and marshes.Gorgân region and
Golestân
province attract large number of visitors each year. Gorgân
is situated 380 km NE. Tehrân and 560 km NW. Mašhad.

Gorgân Art &
History Museum; Close to the Gorgân cemetery (Emâmzâde Abdolâ), is the Art and History Museum, which houses an interesting collection of Persian Preislamic and Islamic pieces, founded around Gorgân. Gorgân Museum is closed on fridays. Address: Šohadâ Street, Gorgân. |

Nur shrine Emâmzâde Nur ( Nur shrine) is surrounded in a little beautiful park in the city center. Nur shirne was builded in the15 centuary A.D.. Address: Xomeini Street, Sar cešme, Gorgân. |

Jâme mosque Masjede Jâme ( Jâme mosque) is the biggest mosque in Gorgân. Note specially the brick tower which is more than1100 years old. The original structure of this mosque dates from the Seljukid period. Now, the only part of the building which belongs to that period is its brick minaret which bears a Kufic inscription. The wooden pulpit of the mosque bears the date 1454 A.D.while the mehráb(altar) is dated 1696 A.D. Within the lecture-hall of the mosque, a number of historic firmans (decrees) have been carved on stone; the latest date included in these firmans is 1910 A.D. and the earliest, 1499 A.D.. In a frame fixed above the pulpit, there is an inscription in Thulth style which bears the name of Abul Qasim Babar Bahâdor, a Timurid general. The mosque has been repaired several times; for instance during the reigns of Šah Abâs I (A.D.1587 -1629) and Šah Abâs II (A.D.1642 - 1666). Address: Nalbandân Bâzâr, Gorgân |

Golšan mosque
Masjede Golšan ( Golšan mosque) is one of the oldest mosques in Gorgân.It is worth seeing, culturally and architecturally. This mosque was builded at A.D.1777. Address: Rejâ iy Street, opposite to "Meydâne Abâs Ali" . |
Gorgân Zurxâne
Zurxâne (The House of Power) is the place where Iranian athletes practice the country's traditional sport; a series of exercises that are accompaniedby a certain style of music that is created with a big hand-held drum (Zarb) and one or more bells (Zang) hanging from the ceiling. In their exercises the athletes, wearing traditional costumes, depiet acts of war as they were practiced in pre-historic Persia. These include the use of bow, shield and heavy clubs in exaggerated forms.There are two zurxânes in Gorgân.

Torang
Tape Remains of several different civilizations lie here. Excavations in 1932 revealed five distinct layers, the earliest dating back to the 6th millennium BC and the latest to the 630-1050 A.D. Different ceramics pieces and lapis lazuli beads indicate that it was a major pottery-producing center. Emâmzâde Rowšan Âbâd ( Rowšan Âbâd shrine); This building with more than 550 years of history is situated 18 kilometers west of Gorgân in the middle of a cemetery in the village of Rowšan Âbâd. Note specially the shrine doors which are c. 600 years old and also grave chamber. |

Natural History museum, Gorgân This museum is situted in Golestân National Park, some 200 kms away from Gorgân. Its single-storey building was opened to visitors in 1984, by the Environment Preservation Department of Gonbad and Gorgân. Useful Phone Numbers Shopping Gorgân is famous for its carpets and handicrafts. The souvenirs of the Gorg ân region are: wickerwork, bamboo products, silk, cotton and wool hand woven cloth, coarse rug, Namad & Jâ jim carpets, felt carpet, wooden products, crocheting and other handicrafts etc. Gorgân rugs and carpets have looks and feel of rugs from Turkmen tribe. Working Hourse BANKS: open 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday to Wednesday and 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. Thursday (close on Friday). BUS COMPANY OFFICES : at the terminals in larger cities open daily from early morning until the evening more or less without a bread. However, in smaller towns they keep shorter, less regular hours, and may or may not be open on Friday or public holidays; in some cases they are active just before a bus is due to leave, and perhaps and extra hour or two a day. FOREIGN EMBASSIES : consulates and business follow the Iranian working week, closing on Friday and often on one other day of the week, usually Saturday, as well as on their own national holidays. However, to make sure on all cases, it is sensible to call first before visiting. GOVERNMENT OFFICES : are generally open from 8 am to 2 p.m., Saturday to Wednesday. Some offices, especially Ministries in Tehran, are closed completely on Thursday and others open only from 8 to 11:30 am or noon.
