Other Group Project Information

LET ME Cite some sources right off the bat, for this page:

I copied this page from Dr. Light's Site from:

http://chemweb.chem.fsu.edu/editors/rlight/4054s01/groupproject.htm

...and then, of course, I modified it to be my Front Page to my Web Page. Oh, yes, and I cite one more source: I saw another student's group page which had copied Dr. Light's "Group Project Information" page. I believe it was our classmate, NODIN H. WEDDINGTON, who did this and gave me an idea to do likewise the same - at a page on his site:

http://garnet.acns.fsu.edu/~nhw0759/group_project_information.htm

(Yes, I looked at all of your web pages... Santa Claus had a day off - so, I had to see who was bring naughty and who was being nice!... As you will see below, we grade each other, and I figured I'd get a head start.) ... But I don't plan to look at y'alls' pages too much more;;; ... I want to derive my web page on my own. I seem to be making good progress. We'll see.

The group project consists of a set of web pages describing a metabolic disease. You can choose a disease from the following list, or if you find another that interests you, then check with Dr. Light to have it approved. Editor-in-Chief, Gordon Watts comments: I chose hypolactasia, the genetic disease conferring allergy (the inability to metabolize) to the "milk sugar," lactose. Hypolactasia was not on the list below, and our professor graciously approved my choice.

  • Abetalipoproteinemia
  • Blue Diaper Syndrome
  • Cystic Fibrosis
  • Dysbetalipoprotenemia
  • Fabry's Disease
  • Familial Renal Iminoglycinuria
  • Favism
  • Gaucher's Disease
  • Guibaud-Vainsel Syndrome
  • Gyrate Atrophy of the Choroid and Retina
  • Hartnup Disorder
  • Homosystinuria
  • Hunter Syndrome Huntington's Disease
  • 4-Hydroxy Butyric Aciduria
  • Jamaican Vomiting Sickness
  • Metachromatic Leukodystrophy
  • Methyl Malonic Aciduria
  • Morquio A Syndrome
  • Niemann-Pick Disease
  • Sandhoff's Disease
  • SanFilippo A Syndrome
  • Tay Sachs Disease
  • von Gierke's Disease

Try to avoid duplication. When your group chooses a disease, I will list that disease as a "description" for the group, so check the group listings to see what descriptions are already chosen.

Organization of Web

Your project should contain as a minimum the following pages, but feel free to add others as appropriate:

Index or Introduction Page
This should be the entry page to all of your project information. It should have a title indicating the disease the project is about, and links to all the pages in your project. Editor, Gordon Watts responds: This page was going to be my INDEX or INTRODUCTION page to keep things simple and avoid having several "Intro" pages. (But, you now have variety here!) My formal title is "~- 110% - Hypolactasia -~," which indicates that I must "give 1110%" becasue hypolactasia has a very surprising danger: Those not afflicted tend to consume more milk and dairy products, which seems to actually result in more health problems, as regression analyses have shown from the scientific literature. Oh, also, as the sole group with just one member, I carry the burden of the entire project, thus I would hope you "give 110%" when grading me - and hope that you would keep in mind, as some know, I am taking Biochem II concurrently with Biochem I - without its prerequisite becasue a prospective employer sprung a surprise on me after I had enrolled for my last semester before graduation! (FDLE's forensics and DNA crime lab requires Biochem 1 but not 2. However, I felt it was logical to "complete the circuit" in my last clear chance, since I have formally graduated with a double major B.S. degree in Biological Science and Chemical Science.)

I gave a short description of the disease above, so this page shall consititute the Intro page. By convention, the links are at the very bottom.

Summary or Abstract Page
This page should provide a short summary of the disease and the most important aspects of it (cause, pathways affected, possible treatment, etc)
Detailed Description
This page should contain the bulk of your report. It can either be one page, which you scroll through, or a series of pages linked to each other. If one page, there should be a contents link at the top that jump to different sections. This page can also contain links to other pages on the web. Note: This page must be in your own words, not text copied from some other web page or some book. If you must quote some text exactly, be sure to enclose in quotation marks and cite the source! You can also link to an outside web page if you want to include detailed information from it, rather than risk copyright violation.
Bibliography
This should be a page listing important references that you have used, both to books and journals and to web sites. In the case of web sites, you should have the links to the site. Note that many journals now have articles on line, and where possible link to them as well.
Individual Participant Pages
Each participant should have a short page giving some information about himself or herself (a picture would be nice) and should describe what that individual did for the project. Links to these pages should be on the main Index or Introduction Page.
Other
Nothing here is meant to constrain you from other imaginative uses of the web to illustrate your project. You can certainly have more pages than these.

The pages above should all be on the same "web", i.e. enclosed in the same directory on the same web server, so that the internal links among the pages can all be "relative" links. Links to things outside this directory should be given as "absolute" links, with the complete URL. You may use any host you want, but I suggest trying your garnet account if that isn't already too full. The complete project needn't be but on one group members account.

I may want to save some of these projects to show future students, so I hope you will give me permission to keep and display some of the material.

Editor, Gordon Watts responds: Sure, I give you permission to capture my web page in its entirety, both the assignment part and the "personal" web pages on my site. Getting the message out, after all, is the whole idea, isn't it?

Grading

Evaluation of the pages will be carried out by myself, the graduate student TA graders, and each member of the class. It will be based on the clarity and thoroughness of the presentation, not on the "jazziness" of the web enhancements some of you may know how to use. (I don't want to put web novices at a disadvantage to those of you who may be web masters.) Try to make the pages attractive, but avoid excessive bells and whistles, motion, or other distracting features.

Deadline

Web pages should be completed by Friday, April 20 to give adequate time for the class to examine the pages.

Feel free to consult with me if you encounter difficulties, or if you have questions as you proceed.

Editor, Gordon Watts comments:

Dr. Light allowed us to work alone if need be. Here is the short email he sent us addressing that topic:

Date: Thu, 1 Mar 2001 16:46:16 -0500 (EST)
From: ROBLEY LIGHT {rlight@garnet.acns.fsu.edu}
Subject: Your Group?

I don't have a group designation for the following.

Jason Farrah
Susana Lima
Jason Moye
Claudie Offrey
Gordon Watts
Jeffrey Wisnom

Let me know if I have made a mistake in this list. If not, I'd like to get an indication of who is going to work with who so I can set up the groups on the web.

Perhaps you might want to join with someone on the list?

Note: If it is an absolute hardship for you to work with someone, you can do the project by yourself.

Group Interaction

Take advantage of the group interaction components of CourseInfo that allows you easily to trade files with each other and exchange comments and email among group members. When posting a file, be sure to give it a name that identifies yourself as well as the file content, and perhaps also a "version" number. For example jsmithpagenamever1.htm.

Have fun!
