A special Thanks to the Currituck County Chamber of Commerce because without their help none of this would be possible!

Currituck County is the most northeastern county in                                North Carolina.  "One of the best undiscovered beaches on the East Coast," USA Today describes this lovely county that was also established around 1668.  This was one of the original five ports for North Carolina and one of the original counties.  Rich in History, this  holds one of North Carolina's five oldest jails.  Not only does this wonderful landscape have rich history, but it is full of tourist!  Over 50% of the land in is in a National Wildlife Reserve or shelter.  Horses roam free on the open beaches without any reaction from the tourist.  It is here some people say that man and animal and nature live together.  Charles Kauralt has not one, but four wildlife
refuges here.  Two of the most popular
known sites are the Currituck
Lighthouse and the remineses of the
Great Dismal Swamp.  Both of these
sites can take your breath away by
the terrific views and the wonderful
wildlife.  Only since 1989 has the
public got to see the whole Currituck
County.  The road stopped at Kitty Hawk and crossed over the Currituck Sound to the mainland.  The convservationist did not want, what is now known as extended part of State Road 54 to be built because it would have to track right down the middle of the wildlife refuges.  They finally met an agreement and decided to build the road.  The finished product was astronomical!  It was a combination of wildlife running free and beautiful ocean-front houses.  In my opinion, no other county in North Carolina can combine tourism, wildlife, and the lush peacefulness of the great outdoors.
