The use of MEMS-based synthetic jet actuators for flow seperation control has been successfully demonstrated in laboratory experiments. However, many issues still remain unresolved, especially regarding their fabrication, optimisation for flow control on aircraft and more importantly how they interact with the surrounding fluid. In this project, it is planned to carry out a series of experiments using a combination of PIV, LDA and other conventional experimental techniques to study the fluid mechanics of synthetic and pulsed jet actuators. It is anticipated that, at the conclusion of the project, it will be possible to identify candidate actuators for seperation control at flight scale.
