May 30, 2002: Eight months and 19 days after the disaster, cleanup and recovery at Ground Zero came to an official end. Originally, the cleanup was expected to last a year.

September 6, 2002: The final death toll numbers 2,801 dead and missing.

First hit
8:45 a.m. Hijacked American Airlines Flight 11 crashes into the north tower of the World Trade Center, blasting a gaping hole in the building and setting it on fire.
  • Boeing 767, Boston to Los Angeles
  • 81 passengers, nine flight attendants and two pilots

9:03 a.m. A second hijacked plane, United Airlines Flight 175, crashes into the south tower of the World Trade Center and explodes into a massive fireball.

  • Boeing 767, Boston to LA
  • 56 passengers, seven flight attendants and two pilots

10:05 a.m. The south tower of the World Trade Center collapses, crashing into the World Trade Center plaza and the streets below. A massive cloud of dust and debris chokes the disaster area, turning lower Manhattan black.

10:28 a.m. The World Trade Center's north tower collapses, turning day into hellish black again.
