HISTORY
Tapestry is known since Middle
Ages but it reached its glory during Renaissance. Famous painters brought
quality and refinement to the woven tapestry: Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640),
Guido Reni (1575 - 1642), Goya (1746 - 1828). The tapestries displayed
Christian emblems, decorative objects, garlands, floral designs, pastoral
scenes, animals, conventional geometric ornamental motifs. The today gobelin
tapestry represent a variant of the ancient gobelin. The grain of XX-th
century tapestry approximates that used in XIV-XV-century tapestry.
TECHNIQUE
Gobelin tapestry is first of
all a technique. It differs from other forms of patterned weaving in that
no weft threads are carried the full width of the fabric web, except by
an occasional accident of design. Each unit of the pattern or the background
in woven with a weft, or thread of the required colour, that is inserted
back and forth only over the section where that colour appears in the design.
As in the weaving of plain cloth, the weft threads pass over and under
the warp threads alternately and on the return go under where before is
was over and vice versa.
Every gobelin is made by diagram.
No knots are used in needlepoint. Gobelin tapestry on this site are made
by petit point,
(two yarn, 100points/cm2).
Thread
and linen are 100% cotton, quality product.
