Eleuthera’s Greatest Need

Believe it or not there are much things that go unnoticed on the island of Eleuthera. Futuristic things that will someday be put in place by people who have a wholesome unbiased interest in seeing the island of Eleuthera and the islands of the Bahamas flourish in unison and without the complications of murder, crime, fraud, government intervention and control and all other forms of crime. There is an ideal unbiased standard to which Eleuthera and the Bahamas can be built and it is with this standard in mind that I write and refer to in this article.

Imagine an Eleuthera with all access to government registries, documents and research facilities as far as national records are concerned. Each island needs its own branch of central government access apart from that existing in Nassau. The ability to network these services and facilities exists already elsewhere in the world today.

I see a futuristic Eleuthera with flourishing major public and private institutions which serve its people with quality and distinction in mind. I see medical hospitals equipped with all manner of modern surgical equipment and staff. I see medical institutions that rival any that you will find in Cuba or the United States. I see universities crowding our landscape filled with eager students interested in getting degrees in various fields of commerce and research perhaps up as far as the doctorate level. I see these universities using their leverage and influence to place their graduated students in the islands most productive factories and commercial businesses. I see fluent efficient government offices built to serve our public in an unbiased efficient manner. I see a self motivated, entrepreneurial class of people populating this island not much unlike many of the current merchants we have populating  our island today. These future residents of our island will be confident, well cared for by their public and private institutions and will be able to maintain and build our island further into the future maintaining the competitive edge necessary to rival some of the worlds largest economies. I see auto factories, Electronics manufacturing companies in addition to the many agricultural research facilities needed to maintain the food source necessary to be price competitive and sufficiently nourish the populous of our future lovely island.

In this future, this productive, success oriented future I envision Eleutherians having the capabilities and the education which only Public and private institutions can give. You see it is the power of positive thinking, insight, vision and the ultimate good will for the people of the island of Eleuthera and the Bahamas that will create a bright future like this for our people. Government intervention and influence spawns negativity, greed, privilege and dissention among the populus.

Having shared this vision with you. Having brought forth a personal dream and ambition I hope to work toward in my short life time in order to enhance the quality of life necessary to continue and attribute to the loving, relaxed status quo  and nature of our now present island people.  I will share with you that I do not think current government visions and investment policies support or contribute to these ends, that is that of a free independent society. Governments of the Bahamas are controlling, domineering and filled with self sustaining bias. All of this is most harmful to our current and future development.

You see, in my current review and perspective for what is happening nationally in the Bahamas I have a few critisms I would like to share. My criticisms have to do with government policies and agenda in the areas of capital investment policies and their effect on the local people of Eleuthera and the Bahamas. My opinion is that our governments are clearly missing the mark and short selling the people of the Bahamas so badly that if we are not careful we will continue to be not just second class citizens of the Bahamas but outcasts in every way which makes us different from the other first world cultures in our hemisphere. I have come to realize some of the aspects of life that make countries like America, Great Britian, Canada and Europe great. My theory is that these cultures entreat their people historically with the abundance of public and private facilities that spawn nothing more than competence, security and access to all things necessary for personal and public growth and prosperity. Public institutions give education, services and a confidence sufficient to create environments and people who are capable of soaring to the stars once given the encouragement they need to survive and grow without government intervention and assistance. This is the environment also that will make the Bahamas and Eleuthera greater places to live. These types of public and private institutions are the necessary elements coupled with a strong private economy and jobs that will create finally an independent, confident Island and nation.

It is fine and good in the short term to encourage foreign investors. What is more alarming is the conditions and the amount of concessions given to these investors who do nothing more for the local Bahamian populus other than give them jobs. For example, lets compare the revenue intake annually of an Atlantis versus the collective salaries annually paid to the employees. That comparison attributes less than 20% of their annual income to salaries.

In first world economies it is public and private business and learning institutions that empower private citizens to be great. It is not government in the Bahamas meddling daily with the media and the concerns of our nation that make the Bahamas a great place to be. We have had to rely on government to lead us in the past and free us from our bondage, that era is gone.

A new era of dignity, equality needs to sweep the windswept islands of the Bahamas leaving each private citizen his or her future to prepare in a positive vibrant economy. I am dissatisfied with the level of independence of Bahamian citizens. Our government intervenes in our private lives everyday and intimidates too many citizens into cowardace and lack of performance. Bahamians have a great struggle which continues with our government. One which we have to actively overcome through our continued struggle to be as free and commercially successful individually as Americans, Britians and Canadians, first world nations. We can do it. It can be done but not without the empowerment of each individual islander through university level education and a strong, private job market and economy.

It is great that we can give away enough of our birthright in hundreds of acres of crown land to Las Vegas based casino business as has happened in Cable Beach in Nassau however what we are doing is not creating a future land grant for a capable Bahamian entrepenuer in the future. Once land is given away it is gone forever there is no turning back from this situation. Our governments in the Bahamas need not a two or five year projection in business but a plan which extends for decades on into the future. We need not be undulated and surprised every year with announcements of multi million dollar projects none of which we may enjoy ourselves. We need a shared vision for the future. We need a free democratic Bahamas without the daily intervention and domination by government in all our national affairs.

Free the Bahamas and do the right things to empower and free each local national citizen of the Bahamas to have the creativity, confidence and knowledge to do it for themselves collectively and we will have a great nation as opposed to a limited government controlled society. So many Bahamians are afraid to venture out into business and private enterprise. They see the bleak economic picture. They see who the country belongs to and who is being encouraged to invest. They see their own divestment and control by government as the new apartheid of the Bahamas. The Bahamas has become a nation classified by the politically tied to government and wealthy on the one hand and the discouraged victimized on the other hand who may never get a land grant.

What will make the Bahamas and Eleuthera great is the establishment on every island of institutions that will empower and make every citizen great and independent. Institutions like Universities, surgical hospitals, agricultural farms and major private manufacturing facilities which Bahamians are capable of building and staffing. This projection for decades to come is what Eleuthera needs.

Eleuthera needs public and private instutions, like Hospitals, Universities, factories etc.  apart from Government offices and controls that bolster and empower local citizens with the capability to grow and the live free enterprising lives Eleuthera Island is known for.

Our governments have struggled with these questions for decades and because of their threat of retreat and non existence they have not been able to produce a viable plan for this nature. Stop gap fixes will not propel the Bahamas into the next century ahead of its competitors. It is a confident, shared vision and plan for a successful people independent and free that will do us well. Do not limit yourself to governments and yield your power to those who control the influence. Remain independent and free and allow your dreams to persist and propel you individually into a successful future.

Fishing Report:

Joint ventures in fishing are currently taking place. Several of our local fishermen joined forces to form a five man jack netting team. At times during the summer local fishermen see the potential in joining forces and fishing  in that manner. Fishing, especially netting jacks is labor intensive and it takes lots of man power to pull the nylon nets gathering the large schools of jack fish in order to harvest the catch. Shares are divided accordingly and according to the size of the catch the collective group of fishermen are paid.

Come get your supply of Jack Fish at the dock in Tarpum Bay today.

Weather:

No end in sight it seems to our local drought situation. No rain in sight for the next few days. It is dry and hot and gradually becoming semi desert. Massive fires take advantage of these dry conditions and leave large patches of dead trees ripe for another major fire.

The high today is 90 degrees with a nice breeze of about 15 knots blowing over the land scape. Tonights low will be in the middle eighties.  Aside from the water conditions the weather on Eleuthera today is quite pleasant and enjoyable.

Long time forecasting of these drought conditions need to be examined since the potential of our island becoming a desert seems a real possibility at this moment. Global warming surely has a hold on us.

Enjoy our Eleuthera weather today. It’s a great day for the outdoors and sports activity.

News, Articles and poetry:

Greetings, today we are going to deal with a myth anyone touring the island of Eleuthera is privy to since it is epidemic and sweeps the entire island. This piece of information should explain much about the nature and financial planning of our local inhabitants. In this light the viewer should realize a few things about Eleutherians they didn’t know before.

Several visits now with some of our tourists revealed a curiosity about the island they all had while touring from North to South and vice versa.

If you were to visit Eleuthera you will see from North to South what appears to be a great contradiction in progress. This in the way of the numerous amounts of unfinished houses which are attempted by local builders.

If you notice clearly there are a ton of houses built, bare blocks exposed, many up to beltcourse stage many beyond without windows or partial roofs. This trend of building has been used for decades and locals have found a significant way to enjoy the luxury of a debt free existence on the island.

This scheme is quite clever and shows the creative nature of many of our islanders who wait patiently for the construction of their home instead of placing great debt on themselves by acquiring a mortgage or loan from the bank.

This technique of building takes great patience and tolerance with the great pay off years behind shchedule never the less fruitful and the final debt free happiness shared by the inhabitant.

What is done is that many islander build in stages with the available cash they accumulate and never get into debt by waiting patiently to accumulate the money to complete the house to the next stage moving in many times as soon as the windows and roof are on the structure and while being sure it is secure and safe. Many move in and wait to accumulate cash for the purchase of certain essential home items like furniture, appliances etc.

So visitors to the island need to realize that these properties are not abandoned. In contrast the local method of waiting and building with accumulated cash from time to time may in the end prove to be the most effective way to build. That depends of the patientce and agenda of the builders.

So the next time you see a developing property like this on Eleuthera realize and think of a debt free existence and a major defeat  and boycott of our modern finance systems. Eleutherians, some of them enjoy a debt free existence.

Is this method of building healthy? I say yes.

Palmetto Point Eleuthera Local Government Campaigning Is At All Time High

Dawn D. Sands

Eleuthera News

The overflow of campaign flyers and speeches has swamped the quaint and picturesque settlement of Palmetto Point Eleuthera.  Three years has swiftly passed away and now preparations for Local Government elections are currently in works for June 27 2005.

In 1997, local government was introduced into the Islands of the Bahamas with locally elected officials being charged with certain local responsibilities.

In election 2005, there are some familiar faces returning seeking a subsequent seat.  Ms. Tryphena Bethel, Mr. Elvis Cooper, Mr. Hank Johnson, Mr. Addison Cooper, Mr. Livingston Stuart, Mr. Grandville Bethel, and Mr. Sammy Sands.  Mr. Bentley Culmer and Mrs. Karen Johnson have decided not to run in this election. On the other hand, you will notice some newcomers to this election looking for their first seat, Mr. Keith Deal, Ms. Trecia Thompson, and Mr. Andy Deal.

This year’s election has an innovative twist to it; seven of the candidates have join forces together to generate what they are calling “The Palmetto Point Dream Team”.  This team consists of   Mr. Hank Johnson, Mr. Addison Cooper, Mr. Grandville Bethel, Mr. Sammy Sands, Mr. Keith Deal, Ms. Trecia Thompson, and Mr. Andy Deal.

In the local government elections, each voter has seven ballots to post. With this team being formed this would make certain that every candidate from “…The Dream Team” would be elected.   The slogan campaign for “The Palmetto Point Dream Team”  is “Vote for Accountability, Vote for Dedication, Vote for Honesty, Vote for Integrity, We Want to Work with the People: And for the People”.

Speaking with Mr. Keith Deal he said, “My primary goal is to see the youth of this community be put first, giving them the best of everything, they are the future leaders of Palmetto Point”

This year’s election is said to be “the best of the best”, we look forward in the future to see who has triumph, and on the other hand, who was trounced.

Fishing Report:

The activity is at the bay front today and in several back yards of fishermen. New nets have been purchased on a large scale and are being prepared for the local Jack catching season which is primarily confined to the summer along the island when schools of jacks are on the run up and down the island.

Local fishermen can have to travel as far as forty to fifty miles away to achieve adequate hauls of jack fish to supply the local market. Jack fish is a local favorite and is available most days at the dock for purchase.

The jack fish seasoned and fried properly, very fresh, can be one of the most delightful meals one may have had in a long time. Jack fish is very tasty.

See you at the docks in Tarpum Bay this summer for the jacks season.

Weather:

Today was another scorcher for Eleuthera. The warmth of the sun, the humidity is here. The first of several storms have taken place in the Caribbean sea and we might be at the beginning of a catastrophic hurricane season, although we pray this isn’t so.

Our high today was a steamy 91 degrees with a low tonight in the mid eighties.

Again there was no rain today, just partially cloudy skies and a very high seasonal humidity.

This weather is great for the outdoors and sea sports activity.

News, Articles and Poetry:

Promoting Eleuthera

As we are well aware, even in our own culture we know there are many way through which to advertise and promote the island of Eleuthera. Advertisers, our own ministry of tourism have budgets in order to achieve this activity with some success. That is how Eleuthera and the Bahamas stay in the tourism business, by placing and presenting our lovely tropical location before the weary travelers of the world offering them as we say, “a piece of paradise,” in the form of a short vacation.

Our company has also found several ways of achieving this same goal through another different and some might say a more creative process. We promote Eleuthera through using its tropical nature, its pristine beaches, its long winding roads and green forests, the goodly nature of its pleasant loving people through their repeated use in our literary pursuits.

Presently there are several areas we are working on. They are firstly and originally through the writing and publishing of feature length novels, of which we have five, three published and on the literary market, two unpublished awaiting the representation of a literary agent aware of the potential contained in our most powerful resources. Secondly through the writing of poetry which is published currently and is also available online through our web page daily news and through several other websites like www.tpqonline.com. Our short stories are also available online through a varied number of websites and literary online channels.

The latest offering emanating from our production capacity is a rather wonderful little tropical love story called, “ Meeting Mona Lisa.” The companion novel for this screenplay should be published soon and become available on the literary market within four to six months.

A furthering of this literary pursuit has rendered a further facet that of writing movies, commonly in the industry called Screen Plays. Screenplays are exciting protracted plays which are used as references or templates used in making movies. We currently after an exhaustive eight months of both study of the art form and full time attention paid to the production of these have completed two. So if we are successful and attract the correct attention you will be seeing Eleuthera and the Bahamas further promoted on the silver screen through its depiction of our Movies. Several film companies are currently reviewing these scripts and have returned in the short term with great reviews of what they have read and think of so far. Meeting Mona Lisa seems to be a favorite among such readers and has the possibility to be produced should a budget become available for it in the near future. Time is running out however since several hotels in which the movie is to best suited for are on schedule to be demolished by the Bahmar development group and project. They are The Nassau Beach hotel and the Cable Beach Wyndham hotel. Should they become demolished before the full production of the movie other locations can be adapted to depict the scenes included in the movie script. This procedure can work as well but will not be as fulfilling and may not have the same impact as filming in the actual buildings which the screen play is based in and on.

So you see, individually we all have creative ideas that we can use to collectively and positively affect the growth and exposure of our tropical surroundings and the island, which we all so dearly love.

Writing novels and screenplays, perhaps in the near future stage plays is one of the ways created to promote our island. These steps, taken slowly after an initial decision some ten years ago have been both productive and fruitful, although no major exposure or success has come out of them as yet. The literary market is a tough place filled with some very determined intelligent players who spend literally life times competing for the available production dollars invested toward the production of such fantastic material for the global literary market.

Producing Novels, poetry, screen plays, stage plays takes no more than imagination, creativity, hard work, determination and several sheets of white paper to record the inner workings or ones imagination. One need not have a budget or wealth of any kind to apply him or herself to such a discipline. The result however can be much different than the task of producing such material. One can gain great fame and fortune should the imagining and writing of such material be accepted and produced by film companies based globally or locally. There is unlimited potential here and I encourage anyone of you who has such a dream and the necessary English skills and talent to pursue your dreams of becoming a major player on the world literary scene. It is up to you the individual to get involved as we have and begin to use your time wisely in the pursuit of this worthwhile means.

Enjoy the sun and think of what the Biminis in the fifties gave to Ernest Hemingway. Think of such titles as,” Islands in the Stream,” written by such talented writers as Ernest Hemingway and see what they evoke. Also the contemporary religious writers in the Bahamas like Dr. Miles Munroe. The sky is the limit and one need not have any special circumstances in order to achieve any success in this area. Apply only great doses of contemplation, reading, study of the literary form and the like and become master of your domain in whichever literary genre you wish to be great in.

This is my daily prayer for you.

See you in Eleuthera soon.

Weather:

What a warm, beautiful day in Eleuthera today. The high today will be 91 degrees Fahrenheit with a low tonight of 84 degrees. Summer has begun and the excitement of sea bathing, sun bathing and summer holidays at the beach are here.

There is little rain in sight these summer days as a prolonged yearlong drought has set in, for several years now. Global warming and its varied conditions take their toll and affect Eleuthera too. Although we sometimes feel we are not a part of the real world out there.

The water table is holding however for now as water demands increase on the island. There is no telling how long this will continue.

Main time foreign homeowners and locals with additional water needs are left to pay absorbenant cost for potable water deliveries from several locations over the island.

Weather:

Hot and dry describes Eleuthera these days. While the temperature is promising to the sun worshippers locals differ from its appearance. There are many predictions that this hurricane season will be quite active due to the early periods of enormous heat.

Conditions currently are favorable to sun lovers and those who like to explore the beaches and tan. The seashore currently provides the greatest means of escape from the days heat and there are many, more than 100 beach locations on our lovely island.

There is little chance of rain currently due to a continued drought. Water tables are being maintained and stocks look promising on into the future.

Come enjoy the tropical beauty of Eleuthera today.

On Eleuthera

Eleuthera is determined by many to be the most beautiful, spacious, tranquil island in the Bahamas with the best proximity and charm to many in the world. Eleuthera is visited by more than 50,000 tourist per annum. The tropical island lies sixty  miles east of Nassau and approximately 150 miles east of Miami Florida. Eleuthera has enjoyed as many as four consecutive decades of a successful tourism industry although the last decade has seen a dramatic decline in new arrival visitors.

Known mostly to Britians, American and European tourists the island boasts of being the most secluded and beautiful in nature to the naturalist taste and a viable market to the second home builder. Many expatriate homes are built by hundreds of foreign investors and rented on an annual reservations basis and has proved to be quite a lucrative investment market by many.

Several friends are currently in the process of building multiple rental houses and are making Eleuthera their second home as well as their most prized investment market. The stable economy and no shortage of skilled, hospitable labor make it ideal for the investor needing such quantities in his investment package. The native inhabitants make great caretakers for these foreign homes as well as maids, chefs, gardeners, painters, even a fine artist colony thrives on this our native island making it one of the more eclectic destinations in the entire Caribbean.

Eleuthera is currently growing with billions of investment dollars and thousands of acres of government land grants promised to both local and foreign developers. In fact the next decade may become a substantial renascence period for the island, which is once again attracting major foreign development and interest.

Eleuthera is poised for growth and is capable in the way of resources to withstand substantial urban development. Both the economic forecasts and the future look very bright for the island which has undergone a substantial decline in growth and a lack of confidence in the international development zone due to politics, potential and other like concerns.

Currently there are a bevy of hotel projects announced by the Bahamian government over the last two years.

Some of the beginning development projects include development areas like Sea Shells of Cotton Bay, Tippy’s development in Governors Harbours Banks Road, Windermere Island, Cape Eleuthera development, Princess Cays, an Under water hotel facility for Hatchet Bay Eleuthera, Promolonts proposed 1 billion dollar hotel marina development on Kemps point in Rock Sound Eleuthera and other ongoing developmental projects which are to create and generate that renascence period so essentially needed for the island of Eleuthera. This projection does not include the many Marina and hotel development projects on stream for the Northern end of the island in areas like Harbour Island and Spanish Wells.

The future looks bright for Eleuthera should these proposed projects come on stream and into fruition. We are looking forward to this much delayed, anticipated period of development on the island of Eleuthera. Several of these proposed developments are undergoing a soft opening and generating much interest for the island of Eleuthera.

Look forward to great thing happening on the island of Eleuthera and do not expect the charm, tranquility and peacefulness of the island to change any time soon as these developments are not situated too close and encroaching on any of the settlements and currently developed areas in our small village like communities. These developments are designed and are expected to only enhance the charm and the capacity of the island to accept and entertain our many expected visitors to our cultural charm and beauty.

See you in Eleuthera soon.

Articles, News and poetry:

It has been some time since I have entered a daily statement into my Internet diary, which I still hope will continue on into the future as much as possible.

Today I take issue with our government and our leaders and their eagerness to give Bahamians birthright away in the form of huge land grants to international/foreign developers.

You see, given economies of scale in our economy local Bahamians have to be eligible to inhabit and be given grants of this same land that they wish to develop.

Lets explore economies of scale, relative investment dollars held by some capable local developers. You see it seems that a project needs to be in the tens of millions of dollars before any investor, local or foreign are considered for land grants.

Many Bahamians have tens of thousands to invest. I recall personally a few years ago when addressing the issue of investing in a hog farm for the island of Eleuthera with the ministry of Agriculture. All I got was lip service and nothing more. At the time I had $20,000.00 to invest in the project. I expressed this fact to the Agricultural officer with whom I was dealing yet in the end I was not considered or even paid attention to as a legitimate investor by that department.

Further along I addressed the Bahamas Development bank about beginning a manufacturing project for Tarpum  Bay, Eleuthera but got no more attention than a letter of acknowledgement from the Director of The Bahamas Development Bank. I received no further attention from that agency whatsoever. Something is gravely wrong in the Bahamas I am afraid when local citizens capable of such small scale developments are not considered to be legitimate, then the morale of these capable investors is hurt.

I am left personally heart broken and dejected by my involvement with the Bahamian government agencies and don’t know how to further proceed in order to receive equivalent incentives in my projects as are given the many foreign investors landing in the Bahamas every day searching for our golden lands in order to profit from our Bahamian birthright which is our own supposedly. There is much healing between government and powerless citizens of the Bahamas in order to rectify this situation and return ownership and dignity to the Bahamian people.

There is much to account for by government when it annually gives away thousands of acres of property to foreign investors and friends of the government but does not consider the average local citizen to invest and not encourage him or her to qualify for the same inventives and land grants given to the foreigner. When will this issue be given consideration by Our Bahamian Government? There is so much that they can do to encourage our citizens into substantial investments.

Can you imagine the hundreds of motel rooms and cottages we are capable of building throughout the Bahama Islands? Do you realize how many Bahamians are waiting for the chance and opportunity to qualify for a land grant from their government?

Our outlook has to change and become more favorable for the common man. We must put the ownership of this country into the hands of our people who have toiled and suffered at the hands of our politicians too long. Times must get better and more favorable for us.

Consider Economies of Scale to be the right characteristic that can apply to the growth and further Bahamian development in our land.
