GLENBRIDE IRISH DOGS / THE GLEN OF IMAAL TERRIER
This tough short legged terrier originates from County Wicklow Ireland in the area call the Glen of Imaal. Imaal means "of the com of Mal. Longer than tall, heavy with dense bone in a small body this is a BIG dog in a small body with true terrier temperament. In the 1800's the publication The Irish Terrier, mentioned the Glen thus: "There is also another strain of Irish terrier, which kept in the Glen of Imaal in the Wicklow Mountains, which still exists mostly blue with tan, short of leg, long in body, and not a straight front, but dead game, being bred and kept for nothing but vermin destroying." In 1933 The Irish Kennel Club officially recognized the Glen as a true breed and and American Kennel Club allowed the entry of the Glen into the Terrier Group in 2004. In spite of his size the Glen is a game dog, hunting instinctively making him a favorite for Earth Dog events. A natural athlete, the Glen competes well in Agility trials as well. While friendly with family, the Glen can be cautious with strangers and outright aggressive with strange dogs coming into their territory.
