Ruthin Town 1 Glantraeth 2
Report by Stan Strickland

A fine second half performance saw Glantraeth take control and win far easier than the final scoreline suggested.

The first forty five minutes were best forgotten as neither defence was really stretched, Glan’s Chris Saxon heading wide and an easy save for OJ Roberts from Ruthin’s Liam Jones being the only efforts of note in the opening 15 minutes. The first real chance for either side came on 25 minutes as Glantraeth’s Rob Williams blasted over after the ball was headed on by Jon Peris Jones. Kevin Roberts fired wide and then had an overhead effort comfortably saved as the visitors ended the half on the attack.

Glantraeth stepped up the pace after the break and quickly began to get on top with Paul Tilbury’s header just off target from a good position on 51 minutes then, four minutes later, Gerallt Jones scored his seventh of the season as he had the time and space to slam the ball home after Rob Williams had set up the chance.

Ruthin should have been back on equal terms within a minute as David Holloway failed to connect cleanly with the goal gaping.

After coming on as substitute new signing Gareth Wyn Roberts had an inviting opportunity to seal his debut with a goal on 71 minutes from an Emyr Rowlands’ cross but he didn’t get enough weight on his glancing header which passed harmlessly wide. Paul Rowland’s pass was met by Rob Williams two minutes later but the Glantraeth striker slipped as he shot and Ruthin were again let off the hook.

Glantraeth were playing some fine attacking football and deservedly went two up on 75 minutes as Rob Williams turned and drilled in a shot from the edge of the area that gave home keeper Jez Porter no chance, the ball passing just inside a post.

Wyn Roberts broke clear seven minutes later but was forced wide and his shot didn’t test the keeper then Porter did well to save from Chris Saxon with his feet as the visitors remained in total control.

With six minutes remaining a rare threat on the Glan goal saw Mark Entwistle shoot well wide then Wyn Roberts put over a fine cross only for Rob Williams to head straight at the keeper as Glan looked for a third.

Glantraeth had kept the home side on a tight reign throughout with keeper Gareth OJ Roberts hardly being tested and it came as a shock as Simon Holloway headed home in the 91st minute following a left wing corner to pull a goal back for an uninspired Ruthin side.

Glantraeth: Gareth OJ Roberts, Jon Peris Jones, Darren Jones, Llion Davies, Paul Tilbury, Richard F Owen, Rob Williams, Chris Saxon, Gerallt Jones (Emyr Rowlands 68), Kevin Roberts (Gareth Wyn Roberts 66), Nigel Barry (Paul Rowlands 66).
