Glantraeth 4 Ruthin Town 2
Report by Stan Strickland

Although Ruthin regained some pride from a much improved second half performance the game was all but over at half-time after a scintillating first half display by Glantraeth that saw them four goals to the good.

Glan meant business from the start with Nigel Barry striking the bar after four minutes and three minutes later Jonathan Peris Jones, moved into a forward role, crossed for Paul Rowlands to volley home and give the home side the lead. It was two on 11 minutes with the same combination at work as Peris Jones again set up Rowlands who this time had a simple tap-in.

Ruthin were being torn apart and Gareth Wyn Roberts got his name on the scoresheet, side-footing home an inviting cross from Gerallt Jones on the fifteen minute mark to make it 3-0.

Peris Jones was again involved on 24 minutes creating a shooting opportunity for Gerallt Jones who connected well only to see his shot pass just wide of goal.

There had been little action at the other end but Gary Ellison had a chance after breaking clear as Glan pushed up for offside only to find keeper Gareth OJ Rberts well positioned to save.

Some fine work from Nigel Barry was rewarded on 32 minutes as he fed the ball to Paul Rowlands whose shot beat the keeper and appeared to be heading for the net before Chris Saxon ran in to make sure and apply the finishing touch.

The mood of the game changed quite dramatically after the break as Ruthin came out looking determined to put on a better show and they belatedly began to cause one or two problems. After Paul Rowlands had a shot pushed over by keeper Llyr Williams Ruthin’s Mark Entwistle threatened at the opposite end with a snap shot that failed to trouble OJ Roberts.

Glantraeth were struggling to find the fluency and control of the first half and one period of pressure from the Denbighshire side led to Gerallt Jones doing well to block a shot from Simon Holloway and from the resulting corner kick Will Roberts fired over.

Ruthin deserved some reward for their efforts in the second period and it came on 78 minutes as Dave Holloway pulled a goal back after getting behind the home defence and seven minutes later Liam Jones went close to another.

With a minute remaining the visitors reduced the arrears even further as good work by Simon Holloway freed Liam Jones whose powerful shot beat OJ Roberts at the near post.

Glantraeth: Gareth OJ Roberts, Jonathan Peris Jones, Darren Jones, Emyr Rowlands (Jason Thomas 51), Paul Tilbury, Richard F Owen, Paul Rowlands, Chris Saxon, Gerallt Jones, Gareth Wyn Roberts (Osian Pritchard 62), Nigel Barry (Llion Davies 62).
