The BEST of L.A.!

sports

Water Hockey Ever since Wayne Gretzky left town, L.A. hockey just hasn't recaptured its glamour. Perfect time, then, for a fresh spin on the game--played underwater. Every Wednesday evening, swimmers troll around the L.A. Valley College pool coaxing a three-pound lead puck through goalposts using short sticks. The game is hardly fast--a good slap shot travels five feet, tops--but it's a serious workout. New players are welcome, provided they bring fins, a mask, a snorkel and a strong pair of lungs ($35-per-month pool fee; sticks and gloves included). We'd go just to see what a slow-motion brawl looks like. 5800 Ethel Ave., Van Nuys, 310-314-4652.
