The objective of this course is to learn chemistry, and learn about learning, in a lab-based environment. Emphasis is placed on working in groups to solve problems presented by the instructor. The problems provide a context and reason for learning. Oral and written communication of the group’s work is a necessary component of this class. This course is designed for the student who is self-motivated and willing to develop an understanding of chemistry through investigation.

This course flows in the same vein as PBL Chemistry I though PBL I is not a prerequisite. (Hint: Read above description for PBL I). Again, this is a laboratory based class emphasizing group collaboration addressing more advanced topics than PBL I; topics such as molecular geometry, molecular polarity, acid-base chemistry, redox reactions, and spectroscopy have been explored previously. Oral and written communication of the group’s work is a necessary component of this class. At the end of the semester, students typically conduct an independent project of their choice and design.
