Our Current Major Project

THE HAWA CHILDREN'S HOME

THE LCIF FUNDED PROJECT
.
The street children problem is a reality in Third World countries. For any Organization or
Government it is a daunting task to overcome the problem in its own. Hence it requires a
concerted effort by both the Government and Social Organizations. In a small country like
Kenya we have an alarming ever increasing population of street children which currently
stands at approximately 180,000 of which approximately 30,000 roam the streets of Nairobi.
...
Taking this into account, Lions Club of Nairobi - Gigiri has taken up the challenge to alleviate
in any way possible to reduce this burden by joining rehabilitation of street children.
...
Considering the Club’s past experience and achievements in rehabilitation street children
by constructing a nursery school, a medical clinic and supporting various street children’s
homes in and around Nairobi, the club strongly felt the need to construct an
appropriate centre namely, Hawa Street Children Centre, at Kitengela, Kajiado
District Kenya which considering the magnitude of the project will spread
over the next 5 years, at a total cost of US$ 1 Million.
...
First Phase
...
In order to meet with an urgent requirement to rehabilitate about 35 street children
and keeping in mind the limited resorces of funds the club built four temporary yet
strong, and fully funished Dormitories (2), Class Room (1),  Kitchen and Dining
Room(1) at a total cost of K.Shs 1,260,000 (US$ 23,000).
...
The Club felt that there was an urgent need of water in the area. A Bore hole was
excavated and an overhead tank of 23,000 Ltr capacity was errected for storage in
association with P.C.E.A. St. Andrews church. The total cost of the water project worked
out to K.Shs 1,200,000  which was  equivalant to USD 21,800.
Second Phase

Lions Club International Foundation (L.C.I.F.) have granted sum of US$ 75,000.00
for the  extention of our Major Project "The Hawa Children's Home"
...
The club is embarking on building fully furnished solid structured
Dormitories, Staff Houses, Kitchen Hall  and  Primary School
to accomodate additional 100 children. The work is under progress and
will be ready by the end of June 2002. The total projected cost of this
structure is US$ 175,000.
