Intralingual Translation, Critical Discourse Analysis
Interactional Modification & Modified Output

     Javad Gholamy
give and forgive but not get and forget

My professional research interests lie in the areas of Intralingual Translation,  Discourse Adaptation
& Modification  and their new  promising  prospects in Material Development,Syllabus Design
and ESP assessmet for  non-native students, Language Learners  and children. The idea of
Intralingual Translation in ESP was born out of a seminal paper jointly presented by Dr. H. Farhady
and me in Iran. Intralingual Translation is defined as:

an extremely motivated linguistic process occassioned by a  particular barrier  in  communication,
consisting of the reexpression of units of discourse, written  originally in a source dialect of a natural
language, in a suitable target dialect of the same language,  so that they become  appropriate, accessible,
         and intelligble to a new  communicative situation  ( Farhady&Gholamy, 1999 ).

Recently, I have increasingly  become  interested in Critical Discourse Analysis and the implications of CDA in
the critical investigation of  internationally used EFL  materials and ideologies followed between the lines. I think
that this provides  a very fertile ground for illuminating research studies which can tackle some endemic
challenges  facing ELT  practices  on a global scale. I hope to delve more deeply into this area in my academic life.
It is a great pleasure for me to share and cooperate with anyone interested in pursuing this line of research.
I am a PhD student in TEFL from Tabriz University. I had  B.A.  studies
in TEFL from Tehran University for Teacher Education, M.A. in TEFL
   fromTehran University.
I was born in a costal village in Urmieh. I had my primary schooling
there. To learn more about my birthplace,

My mother tongue is Turkish.  I also  speak Farsi and English fluently.
    I love mountain-climbing, swimming,sight-seeing, and  playing tennis.
I am also a strong fan of nature,  wild and  green life. I wish to explore
as many friends as I can all around  the world. I have been
teaching English for more than 7 years professionally.
I have taught General and Business English (Communication
& Correspondence), TOEFL  & IELTS  Preparation Courses,
and Medical English  to  a  wide variety of EFL learners .
I grow and mature  along my students.

My M.A. thesis project was entitled:

"Criteria for Intralingual Translation in ESP: a heuristic study on VOA's Special English".
Dr. Lotfipour from Tabriz University was my thesis advisor. We worked on VOA's Special  English programs to
heuristically reach at some objective, systematic and   interactionally  authentic methods for  discoursal
modification of native-used genuine materials in academia.
I have been granted  scholarship from Urmia  University  and will hopefully join the teaching staff of
    English Department after graduation.
I passed the PhD comprehensive Iran as the top candidate. Now, I am working on my dissertation proposal.
     I am  planning  to conduct
my dissertation on interactional modification and opportunities for modified output
among  EFL learners with  their non-native teachers and NS
tourists visiting Tabriz. I would study this issue in
natural  classroom  settings and in dyads between EFL teachers and their students and the same studetns with
     NS tourists  visiting the  institute.
Your kind comments and suggestions concerning this study are all welcome and appreciated.
Thank you for visiting this page.
