A short history of IRC

IRC was developed in 1988 by Jarkko Oikaninen from a program called MUT (MultiUser Talk) which was written by Jyrki Kuoppala. When IRC first came online at the University of Oulu (Finland) in late August 1988, there were around 10 users. The first IRC server, tolsun.oulu.fi, remains online.

For those who like to get their information from a book, try Using Internet Relay Chat - The User-Friendly Reference by Marianne Pyra. The Macmillan Information Super Library should tell you where to get it.

IRC...(Internet Relay Chat)

This links to a page that explains how to use IRC and has a link to download mIRC. mIRC for some peculiar reason has nothing to do with Macintosh computers...the Mac IRC programs are called IRCle and Homer (yes.....Homer Simpson speaks when this one loads!) IRC resources can be found on .net CDs. Subscribe by going to the Future publishing home page or use the download and help links below to download Homer.

IRC...Homer for Mac (& other Mac software)

Homer is one of the IRC programs for the Mac. Easy to use. This site also includes other essential internet software. Got everything except Homer......get Homer only! Want to know how to use Homer? Get the manual!
