Assignment 1

The correct drafting of an executive summary is very important.  Communication is the key to leadership.  Being able to communicate with the surrounding environment and making people understand what a leader is talking about is an essential asset of a leader.  Without communication skills on the leader’s part, the essence of leadership becomes lost and this is why good communication skills are important.

An executive summary should begin with an introduction of the speaker’s intentions and give a brief explanation of what is about to follow.  The summary is divided in three different parts with the introduction being the first one.

After the brief introduction the jist of the summary is about to follow.   This is divided in two parts, the facts and the analysis of the summary.  The facts of the summary are the relevant facts and should be written down without any type of judgment or examination.  The examination and the judgment should come in during the analysis of the summary, which follows the facts.  This is where the main points of the summary should be emphasized and briefly analyzed.

Closing, the final thoughts of the summary should be given in the conclusion, which comes up after the analysis.  The essence of the leader’s case should be completed in this part of the summary.  An executive summary should not exceed ¾ of a page to a page and should be written in the third person and never in the form of I.  These rules should be followed in order to achieve the objective of an executive summary.  The essence of the summary needs to be strongly emphasized.
