History

Faralya is a very old village, dating back to pre-Lycian times. The community is very small; 450 people live in a 20km stretch that makes up the village. The town got it's first road in 1983. Prior to this, villagers would take the donkey trail to Fethiye (Oludeniz didn't yet exist as a town). In 1985, electricity was brought up the mountain and in 1997, telephone lines.

Faralya, Butterfly Valley and the surrounding mountainside are all on protected land which means that we can hope that Faralya will remain as it is today for many years.

The Karaburun family has lived in Faralya for over 100 years. The family is headed up by Ridvan (George) and his wife Sheri. They have 7 children: Ramazan, Emina, Mustafa, Zühre, Nuray, Tülay and Hasan.

The first travelers climbed up the trail to George House in 1991, when the tourist boats first started coming to Butterfly Valley. At that time, George and his family offered the guests tea and some basic meals, but were not prepared for overnight guests. The family was living in a small farmhouse and carried all their water from the spring.

In 1995, a new house was built and George House started inviting travelers to stay the night. Over the next few years, a treehouse was added and the guests started to come in larger numbers due to the bus service which started in 1997. 1999 brought the completion of the house with modern toilets, showers and guest rooms.
