Zoolander

-Story-

This is a really funny story. It’s lighthearted and silly, and perfect fodder for the likes of Ben Stiller. Which makes sense, seeing as he wrote at least some of it. Derek Zoolander is the world’s foremost male model. But he is about to be used in a plan so diabolical, it could only come from an arch criminal mastermind; the bane of the fashion world, Mugatu. Derek, while trying to find his place in a changing market, and dealing with the death of his roommates in a hilarious freak gasoline fight accident, is kidnapped, and brainwashed to assassinate the president of Malaysia. Where as, we all know, the best sweatshops in the world are run from. Derek’s only aid on his quest to stop the nefarious Mugatu lies in his arch rival hot new supermodel Hansel, and a quirky but intelligent reporter for Time magazine. Together the three must find out how to stop Mugatu’s evil plan before Derek goes on a killing rampage, and they’ve also, of course, got to look fabulous doing it.

-Look-

This film is for the most part pretty straightforward in its presentation. The clothing is great though, as I the hair. Both Derek and Hansel look fantastic and are very stylistic; even though neither of them could really ever make it as a model. I loved some of the touches here and there. Mugatu’s quaffed poodle, Hansel riding around on his scooter, the funniest scene in the film with the gasoline fight. It all adds together to create a really funny lasting impression. There are also a large number of cameos in this film. It’s really just plain fun Hollywood. Great work.

-Acting/Direction-

This film is wonderful for it’s talent. Ben Stiller, plays Derek Zoolander, Owen Wilson in I think his funniest role ever plays Hansel, Jerry Stiller (Ben’s actual father) plays Dereks agent, and Will Farrell of Saturday Night Live fame plays the evil Mugatu. Even some of the cameos are really decent, Davis Duchoveny (sp?) as The Conspiracy Guy, and Billy Zane (as himself). I think they all worked really really well. In particular, Owen Wilson, and Ben Stiller are great together; they’ve just got really excellent screen chemistry. Which is probably why they’ve been in like 4 films together. Anyhow, good job. The direction was decent. Not too much going on, I mean it is a comedy… the most important thing in my opinion is to get good actors together and a good editor. And they really did it here so my props go out to them.

-Overall-

This is a really funny film. Stiller and Wilson are at their finest and it’s just a great light hearted romp through the world of professional modelling. Definitely worth checking out, you’ll get more than your money’s worth of laughs.
