..Old Bethel or Presbyterian Cemetery in Bethel New York..it is a shame that someone doesn't fix this cemetery up a bit..the newer cemetery Evergreen is across the street..the Jewish cemetery to the side..the Bruchers are buried on the right side in the back..we were going to offer to make a sign to put up..but that never happened..

--*and a few surrounding areas--

I have made a page with a few enlarged Old Bethel Cemetery pictures including the one shown here.

**** I got home once more in 2003. I visited cemeteries more to take pictures than anything. I can not drive so it is not easy.

We did try to drive back where we were told one cemetery is. WHOA..!!.. My gosh I guess we almost went on private land. The thing is this. There is a road with a street sign. It does not say PRIVATE. You go back a ways and it does say no trespassing but still the sign is posted on the land, it does not say the road..someone came out and was not very nice at all..very nasty..

..I would like to inform people that if you have a relative buried somewhere and are denied access you can probably take it to court like the Hatfield and Mc Coys did..

If you have a private road and do not want the public on it put a gate up..

..AND REMEMBER..

..IT'S ALL GOD'S LAND ANYWAY..

I have been planning this for over 3 years. I wanted to put something on all my ancestors and relative's graves. I had already bought some beautiful roses but I decided they would not stand up to the rain. So I bought new ones recently. I paid $1.80 each for them but they looked almost real. Then I took a picture of a rose and printed it out. I declare they almost looked the same. I laminated this rose after I wrote a message on the paper. I made a slit with scissors and put a pretty ribbon through this tying them to the roses. Some I put on were single roses, others were full bloom roses and some were buds. I made bows on some. I will have a picture. These really looked so nice. I was so pleased with them..

Since visiting home in 1998, I have tried to obtain information concerning cemeteries in Sullivan County NY. It has taken some doing, gradually I have found quite a few. I was told there were over 200 cemeteries in Sullivan County..some were family plots..someone kept it in their head as to whom was buried there..over the years this informaton was lost..

**While visiting in 2003 I realized some of the stones in Old Bethel are nothing more than that, stones. Of course years ago something may have been written on them. There are quite a few near the entrance. I did take some pictures. I need to learn how to scan now..

..Pintler..

I have found instances where I am told headstones were plowed under. Except for basic care many cemeteries are not taken care of. Headstones are on the ground. I urge any churches, boy-girl scout groups to look into helping in this area.

A local map may tell you where cemeteries are. Look for Cemetery Rd etc, you can be sure a cemetery is or was on this road or nearby.

I try to be careful to not have duplicates or links that are not working. If I do find a site with a lot of un-working links I will try to weed the good ones out...

Do remember this. Many cemeteries may once have been on a main road, and no longer are. Up home to find one cemetery you have to hike almost two miles back into the woods. You can go part of the way with a car, but I sure could never do it. I got to thinking about it and made some inquiries, this use to be the main road.

If doing some family history for future generations you may want to add a map showing where cemeteries are. In Bethel there are cemeteries on both sides of one road. So, if they ever need to widen the road this will be a problem. I do not think they could put in another two lanes. The possibility of adding one lane might work.

Supposedly my great grandparents had 16 children, the information I was given shows many died young, yet there is no record of their burials.

I inquired about this. We now believe most or all of them were buried in a cemetery with no markers on their graves. From what my mother and aunt told me, I found the location in the cemetery, it does look as if there would be room for them there and one of the children is buried close by with a marker.

I did send for two death certificates, they helped, but did not solve the problem as one only told where they were buried, nothing about a cemetery name, the other did list a cemetery name, however, there is question to which cemetery this is.

..A Few Short Cemetery Stories..

I had looked for my Great Grandmother Dodderl for many, many years. We were not sure of the name spelling, her first name etc. When I had gone back to my mothers I said let me look one more time in my sister's baby book where mom had written the name down. I went back over to the cemetery in Narrowsburg. Finally I said I give up, I will never find her. I went from one set of family graves to another. Coming back I went to the passenger side of the truck for some reason. After all..I was Driving..!!.. I put my cameras in the car and turn around and there she is..!!.. I am standing out there hollering THERE SHE IS..jumpin up and down. For some reason I feel I look just like her. I did take a picture and lost it.

While in NY a few years ago and collecting names in cemeteries I spotted some deer. I said to myself..Oh Look someone has put those fake deer on a grave. Now if you go to cemeteries you come to know this is not too far fetched and some do look so real. All at once these deer started to move. I really laughed. The thing was the deer no longer take off like they use to. They stood there and watched ME. With the look on their face as if they are asking. WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?

..I have counted at least 100 SURNAMES..a few ..HELLER..ACKERLY..SHAVER..LAUNT..HUFF..EGGLER..OVERTON..TAYLOR..CABLE..WELTON..

This is a listing of information compiled about cemeteries in Sullivan County. SURNAMES for Old Bethel and Evergreen cemeteries is included. I make no claims about this information, it is merely what I have been told or have observed. Remember many of the Sullivan County areas are on the Pennsylvania border and there is a connection.

..99 means this cemetery is in use in 1999..etc. Just because the 99 is not there does not mean it is not in use .. realize some of these cemeteries may not be used much but as an older person who paid for burial years ago passes away it is used.

Sparrowbush
Pine Hill Cemetery-99

On Rte 42 between Monticello and Port Jervis there are three cemeteries......St Thomas Aquines, Forestburg in Sullivan County, Quarry Hill in Rio, Pine Hill in Sparrowbush which is larger and in Orange County.

I am told there are two other small, private cemeteries in this area. Coming from Monticello turn left at Forestburg light, a couple of miles down the road it forks off the main road in a short distance is a small cemetery with a few readable stones and dozens of marker rocks that were just that-rocks.

Backing up to the road you turned off of and heading toward Cuddebackville, there is a small cemetery on the right, close to the road possibly 4-5 miles from the first one. There is a house close to it and it is very close to the Neversink River. I heard there was a cemetery in Hartwood, which is in that area too. There may be others to the right of the Forestburg light too.

I am told there is a Cold Spring Cemetery, could this be the same as the Messenger one? The Messenger one is listed in 99 for a burial but someone also mentioned the Cold Spring one to me in 99, however the same cemetery may go by two names.

..SURNAMES..

Old Bethel or Presbyterian cemetery located in Bethel, New York. This is located on Rte 17-B across from the current cemetery in use at this time. Evergreen Cemetery. At this time a stone wall goes around this cemetery. An opening is located on the side. Some stones are on the ground, but it is still in pretty good shape. I only wish I had the time to get it in better shape.

I did this because I do not live in the area and found it very hard to get much information. I hope this will help.
