Track & Field Athletics Australia    by Graham Thomas

2003 World Youth Championships

Jana Pittman - 1999 ChampionThe Third IAAF World Youth Championships will be held in Sherbrooke, Canada in July.

Australia has done well at these championships in the past.

Our team won two gold and a bronze medal at the inaugural event in 1999, and the 2001 squad finished an impressive fourth on the medal tally, winning three gold, three silver and one bronze medal.

As in senior athletics, the majority of Australia's medal successes have been achieved by female athletes.  Jana Pittman (400m Hurdles), Shermin Oksuz (Long Jump) and Kimberley Mickle (Javelin) have all been crowned World Youth Champion.

Georgie Clarke, who won the 800m in 1999 and the 1500m in 2001, is Australia's most successful athlete at these championships.  James Watson - who won silver in the 2001 boy's High Jump - is Australia's most successful male athlete.

Many athletes will be competing in their first serious international meet. Some thrive on the thrill of competition; in 2001 Kim Mickle improved her personal best by over three metres in winning the javelin.

AUSSIE SUCCESS IN 2003

Predicting the medals in under-age championships is always difficult. A number of good performances by junior athletes are often overlooked when ranking lists are compiled, while many 'unknown' athletes step up at the international level. And - of course - there is always the factor of luck.

Australia would be very fortunate indeed to surpass our 2001 medal tally. Probably the best chance of a gold medal is Sally McLellan in the 100m Hurdles. Sally is also running in the 200m and, to complicate her task, both events are being held on the same days.

Jamee-Lee Hoebergen (400m) and the Girl's Swedish relay team are other chances of medals , but American and Jamaican opposition, 'at home' will prove very tough to beat in sprint, hurdles and jump events.

I rate field events athletes as the likeliest Australians to step up.  High-jumpers Ellen Pettit and David Baskin and the throwers Annabel Thomson, Ronnie Buckley and Simon Wardhaugh could all improve their best performances in the Championships and, in some cases, this could mean medals.  Thomson and Baskin's best performances leading into the Sherbrooke event are similar to those of Mickle and Watson prior to the 2001 Championships, where they starred.

Long jumper Jacinta Boyd missed much of the Australian domestic season due to injury and is still a little below her best. She has enough talent to still challenge for a medal, but a PB would probably be needed to take the gold.

Good Luck to the Youth of Australia!
