Genetic Engineering: Worth the Risks? October 13 - 15, 2000
The Genetic Engineering Action Network (GEAN) and Free Agency are organizing a New York area conference on genetic engineering October 13 - 15 at the City University of New York's midtown campus in Manhattan (365 Fifth Avenue between 34th and 35th Streets).
The GEAN New York Conference will present speakers, workshops and an educational "Biotech Roadshow".
The event is free and open to the public.
Genetic engineering is the manipulation of genes -- the building blocks of life -- to make new life forms that have never existed before. These experiments are being brought from the labs right into our lives as genetically engineered plants, foods, trees and animals are being released into our environment without any long-term sfatey tests or controls. The effetcs on human health, the environment and society could be very dangerous according to current studies.
The purpose of the conference is to publicize the dangers of genetic engineering and the better alternatives, and to help build a strong movement against irresponsible genetic engineering.
