Basilique du Sacré Coeur

A formal meaning of the Church of the Sacred Heart is really the National Vow to the Sacred Heart. Located on the Northen edge of the city in the Butte-Montmartre (18th arrondissement). Basilique du Sacre Coeur It was paid for by national subscription after the defeat of the Prussians in 1870. The architect was Paul Abadie who died during its construction. Work began in 1876, but it was not completed until the year 1919.

It is a magnificent sight on the hill overlooking Paris. As you probably have seen on the opening page of this web site, many tourists flock to it. There are many other things to do in this area as well. Foreign artists often sell their wares on the streets below the church. Paris can be somewhat overwhelming on your first visit and yet it is a subtle awe that overtakes one, rather than a feeling of sensory overload.
