Purpose and Objectives:
To promote appreciation and enjoyment of gardening, whether in large areas or small
containers and/or other gardens, whether they be in a park setting or a neighborhood.
To develop a love of plants in the hearts of children.
To promote friendships with others who are interested in gardening.

Community Projects:
The Gardeners of Cheney do the prep and plantings for the Cheney Care Center flower beds
and the fire station. We have participated in "Gardening from the Heart" projects such as
planting a flower bed with senior citizens at the Cheney Care Center. We worked with children at the elementary schools in planting and transplanting flowers during their project  to clean up the city cemetery. We helped senior citizens at the Wren Pierson Community Center learn how to transplant and plant hanging plants. One of our biggest ventures was when some of our members helped with the site preparation for the landscaping of Cheney's Habitat for Humanity duplex. We've made planters for the Cheney Care Center Eden Alternative, a program to bring greenery into nursing homes.

We encourage gardening in the community through our spring and fall plant sales where we have developed a loyal following and some special friendships.  We award an
annual scholarship to a student studying horticulture at a regional college or university.

Six months of the year are devoted to "Yard of the Month" designations, whereby the
Gardeners of Cheney pick a local, deserving yard/garden each month, based on curb appeal
(from April through September).  The yard is featured in our local newspaper, the "Cheney Free Press."  The Cheney Kiwanis Club sponsors this program with monetary ontributions to the charity of the recipients' choice and the  "Yard of the Month" sign is displayed for a month. This program has helped develop an interest and love of gardening, promoted
camaraderie amongst the citizens of Cheney, and provided our city with great beauty
and immense pride.

Our newsletter,"The Cheney Garden Thymes," keeps our membership informed and
united. This very challenging endeavor has been shared by many members and helps
us all to realize the value of participation in the club. Our yearly scrapbook is a
testament to all the varied projects we do and the fun we have doing them. We are a
very active and fun-loving club with much to offer. We are visible to the community
through the many projects we perform and encourage new membership with our
club's informative and valuable programs and activities.
