>Subject: QuakeCon vs CPL Comparison - [CPL Sponsors]
>
>
>A few of the CPL sponsors have asked us about QuakeCon and how they compare
>to a CPL Event. Instead of the CPL making that comparison, we will quote
>the press on a few subjects that seem to be sore points for that event:
>
>1. No power for six hours
>
>"It's about 5 pm cst here in Mesquite, Texas and we finally just got back
>online from a power outage that lasted about two hours. Everything was
>somewhat delayed, especially the tournament, which is just beginning with
>the early FFA stages now. The cause of the outage was a blown generator.."
>Terrell Garrett (ShackES)
>
>"It is now around 9 pm cst here in Mesquite. Everyone thought the one power
>outage would be the last and final one, but we were interrupted by two more
>that lasted for three more hours or so." Terrell Garrett (ShackES)
>
>"made it back alive from Quakecon tonight. I couldn't really give you an
>update from the event due to the power being out for somewhere around 6
>hours due to power generator problems." Sean (Stomped)
>
>"I'm very sorry that I'm late posting this, I'm at the worst LAN party ever
>called QuakeCon. The power is going out every hour or so, peoples computers
>are getting ruined, what else will happen. " Johnson (Domain of Games)
>
>
>2. Only cash prizes for three people
>
>"socrates: Had a great tournament, but if I were him I'd be feeling a little
>pissed right now. He was one win away from earning $5000. What did he get
>instead? A video card." Muiy (ShackES)
>
>"So, here are the final results:
>1 - Zero4 (30,000$)
>2 - Fatal1ty (10,000$)
>3 - Revenant (5,000$)
>4 - Socrates (applause)" Viper (CyberFight - Russia)
>
>
>3. Claims of misrepresentation
>
>"On a related note, only $45,000 was awarded in this "$50,000
>tournament"....apparently the rest of the cash prize is in merchandise
>prizes, which is.....well, misleading is really the only word for it. "
>Muiy (ShackES)
>
>
>4. Tournament Schedule and Seedings
>
>"It's 3am and the end of the ffa heats are still a couple hours away. A lot
>of people are still milling about the tourney area, as most are probably
>planning on staying up tonight to see who and when they're playing
>tomorrow." Muiy (ShackES)
>
>"Quakecon, with it's lack of seeding and ffa format, has always had an aura
>of unpredictability. Top players knock each other out early, and unknowns
>survive into the late rounds." Muiy (ShackES)
>
>"For the most part, seedings are kind of screwy (I myself am seeded 19th,
>which is nothing short of strange)" snagger ( ES America)
>
>"The duel tournament is getting off to an inauspicious start here at
>Quakecon, as forfeits and matches between two unknown players are the story
>of the day so far." Muiy (ShackES)
>
>
>5. Tournament Software bugs
>
>"There were actually some bugs in the ngstats this time" Muiy (ShackES)
>
>"For those of you looking at all the brackets and stats information from the
>netgames page, you may want to know this. It appears that the netgames
>software doesn't actually have a "forfeit" function/button/whatever built
>into it. This means that a lot of the stats posted that have one player
>forfeited and another advancing is incorrect/reversed. Also, it appears that
>none of the demo links actually work, not sure what the problem." ebola (ES
>America)
>
>"Unfortuneatly it doesn't appear that ZeRo4's POV from the final match
>actually uploaded using netstats. I'm not sure if he exited to fast or the
>netgames software screwed up." ebola (ES America)
>
>
>6. Internet connectivity too many people on a DSL line
>
>"There is however, a slight problem here at QuakeCon. The BYOC area has so
>many people in it that the internet connection is about as fast as a
>2400baud modem." ebola (ES America)
>
>
>7. No Vulgarity Control Enforced
>
>Listen to a recording made of a player during one of the matches:

>Caiman.mp3
>
>
>8. Slight Oversight?
>
>It seems that no one wrote the names of the winners on the checks before
>taking pictures of them, as you can see in this picture:

>Here's the last general comment from ShackES
>
>"There's a depressing vibe in the Quakecon BYOC area right now. I went
>through all the 1v1 servers, hoping to play a few tight-but-friendly duels
>with other "good" players, but the only people duelling are newbies. Most
>good players just don't even seem to be around right now- they're somewhere
>not playing Quake. If you were at the Razer CPL and you stayed up really
>late playing games, you know that the action was intense all the way through
>the night. I remember staying up crazy late on Friday/Saturday night"
