The Avengers

The British tv program The Avengers is the inspiration for this website and for our motto:

Let's Get Avengerous.

The Avengers, aired in England in 1962, was the first series to portray a woman as an equal teammate and partner to a man in a dangerous business - in this case espionage.

John Steed was the 'top professional'. The talented amateurs were, first, Cathy Gale and then Emma Peel. The Cathy Gale episode were, in the main, straightforward crime dramas, with Steed usually manipulating Gale into helping him, and Gale agreeing more often than not, not because of the manipulation but because of a strong sense of helping justice. When partner Emma Peel came on the scene the dynamic changed - Emma Peel enjoyed the chase, the...competition...against the villains.

As a character put it in the episode "Epic", the Avengers women, and Avengerous women, are:

[women] who could become desperate and yet remain strong...
... women who could become confused, and yet remain intelligent...
women who could fight back and yet remain feminine.

The Avengers women make perfect role models, and these pages will explore this statement, from the Get Avengerous Guide which examines all aspects of the behavior of Steed toward his partners, and their attitude towards him, to the fiction of Caroline Miniscule which maintains the flavor of the original program.
