America

We cry in shame at the atrocities committed by our fellow man
Yet do nothing about the reality of it
We can cry in our beds late into the night
But when it comes to real movement, we never follow through
The crucial moment comes, then our hearts show weakness
Not in empathy, or even sympathy, but in fear of life
We care more about ourselves than each other
And this breeds lies and hatred

Proclaiming all these freedoms, but what are we free from?
The habitual acts of the government to put us down
But people make up this country, and we do not like limitations
So we rise up against our own, killing, maiming, and raping
The smell of power over someone else driving us on
We are slaves to our own impulses
Never remembering our pasts
And never thinking of our future

So what are we free from? Certainly not each other
We force ourselves and our neighbors into chains we forge
Caring not for what the long-term consequences are
We are creatures of convenience, wanting it all right now
We destroy everything around us without a second thought
And those who speak their minds are shot down in the dead of night
We claim we listen, but our cries fall on deaf ears
We have trapped ourselves into believing the lies we started
