On a cold winery night on February 3 , 1959 a small plane took
off from Clear Lake , Iowa going to Fargo , N.D. ..
The plane never made it .
The tragic news that Buddy Holly , Richie Valens , and
The Big Bopper ( J P Richardson ) had died in a plane crash
in the Midwest along with their pilot Roger Peterson not only
stunned millions of fans around the world , but left a vacuum
in rock and roll history that has never been filled.

All three were at the peak of their popularity and together
had sold over 10 million records in just over 12 months .
While performing on a  tour called " The Winter Dance Party
" Buddy Holly the biggest headliner , backed up by Waylon Jennings ,
a friend from Texas and Tommy Allsup , a former Cricket
decided to charter a plane after Valens and Richardson
caught colds on the tour bus .

Waylon Jennings gave up his seat to Richardson it is said .
Richie Valens and Tommy Allsup flipped a coin and Valens
won this is known for sure . Of the three Buddy Holly's
loss was felt the deepest . He was the brightest new star
since Elvis and his potential was unlimited . He had
achieved 10 hits in America and Britain and his influence
was beginning to be felt throughout the rock world .
