"We are determined to foment a rebellion,
and will not hold ourselves bound by any laws
in which we have no voice or representation."

-- From Abigail Adams to John Adams, 31 March, 1776

....................... * ........................

ABIGAILS-L is a fully moderated email list dedicated to gaining full and equal women's rights through direct action.

Abigail's Rebels: A Feminist Activist Discussion List ABIGAILS-L@HOME.EASE.LSOFT.COM is an email list named in honor of Abigail Adams: women of letters, american patriot, businesswoman, wife & mother.

In order to further Abigail Adams' "rebellion" of the full emancipation of women (thereby achieving the liberation of humankind & creation)--a rebellion which continues on many fronts from a woman's own body, to the home & office, to the NGO/UN Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, to cyberspace & beyond--the email list BEIJING95-WOMEN was renamed ABIGAILS-L on December 28, 1995. Irene Stuber (istuber@direclynx.net) and Jennifer Gagliardi (gagliajn@netcom.com) co-moderate ABIGAILS-L, focusing on issues concerning and impacting the feminist community. It is hoped that this information exchange on ABIGAILS-L will facilitate feminist activism.

Any direct action undertaken on behalf of the feminist/pro-feminist community is appropriate discussion material on ABIGAILS-L--from personal day-to-day decisions (domestic activities, consumer choices, work place issues, etc) to direct political action (electing women to political office, especially oneself *HINT,HINT*). Speak from personal/professional experience with the view of addressing a common concern.

ABIGAILS-L also serves as a compliment to issues raise on BEIJING95-L (beijing95-l@majordomo.netcom.com) a email list dedicated to the Fourth World Conference on Women, Beijing 1995; Catt's Claws (catts-claws@majordomo.netcom.com) a feminist newsletter; and Women of Achievement & Herstory (woah-herstory@majordomo.netcom.com) a daily posting celebrating women (currently on hiatus--Irene is editing a book version of WOAH-HERSTORY!).

May 1998, ABIGAILS-L moved from NETCOM.COM (which used majordomo) to its new home, LSOFT.COM to take advantage of LISTSERV's many customization features.

Aside from discussion, ALERTs (phone/fax/email or direct action alerts), ANNOUNCEMENTs (conferences, meetings, etc), DAREs (Direct Action REsources), and QUERYs (request for info/contacts) of interest to the feminist community are welcomed and will be appropriately tagged. Please also prefix all your Subject Line with AB to further aid people sorting through their mailboxes.

As of July 96, we are not accepting any posts related to NOW until NOW sponsors its own discussion list. Please address your NOW-related comments to NOW@now.org or check out http://www.now.org/.

To cut down on multiple crossposts, ABIGAILS-L does not reproduce the ALERTS from the following ESSENTIAL alert-lists. We highly recommend that you subscribe to the following:

    ....................... * ........................

Elizabeth Cady Stanton wrote the Declaration of Sentiments for the first ever Women's Rights Convention, July 19-20, 1848:

"Prudence indeed, will dictate that governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they were accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their duty to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security. Such has been the patient sufferance of the women under this government and such is now the necessity which constrains them to demand the equal station to which they are entitled.

"The history of mankind is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations on the part of man toward woman, having in direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over her.

    ---

"Now in view of this entire disfranchisement of one-half the people of this country, their social and religious degradation -- in view of the unjust laws ... and because women do feel themselves aggrieved, oppressed, and fraudulently deprived of their most sacred rights, we insist that they have immediate admission to all the rights and privileges which belong to them as citizens of the United States."

    ....................... * ........................

"Men, their rights and nothing more; women, their rights and nothing less!"

--The motto of the Revolution, the publication of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony.

    ....................... * ........................

"Women have always fought for men, and for their children. Now they are ready to fight for their own human rights. Our militant movement is established."

-- Emmeline Pankhurst, My Own Story.

    ....................... * ........................

"You really CAN change the world if you care enough."

    -- Marion Wright Edelman

    ....................... * ........................

"Women are no longer asking for rights. We expect them, and if any of you prevent us from using them, we will go through you, we will replace you, we will fossilize you into horror museums along with slavery, burning at the stake, and \\`Kinder, Kuche, Kirche.'"

    -- Irene Stuber in a 1992 article.
