Positive Force
This eight-piece jazz funk act was formed in
Pennsylvania, USA by Brenda Reynolds and Albert Williams. Producer
Nate Edmunds discovered them and brought them to Sylvia Robinson’s
Sugarhill label. Edmunds produced their first single ‘We Got The
Funk’ which he had co-written with Reynolds and Williams. The
record vanished without trace in their homeland although it became a big club hit
in the UK and spent a week in the Top 20 in 1979. Despite
appearances on shows like Top
Of The Pops in the UK, it was the only taste of success for Reynolds and
the groups other vocalist Vicki Drayton. They were however positive
about the situation, saying they really enjoyed their five minutes
of fame because to quote them, ‘For once in our lives we had been
treated like someone special’. Positive Force made a brief
reappearance in the UK Top 75 the following year when ‘We Got The
Funk’ was featured
in the club/disco medley hit from Calibre Cuts.
