The Western...Fort William, entrance to the canal. Ships enter the sea
level lock and the water-tight gates are then closed behind them, whilst
similar gates before them, containing dammed water at a higher level ,
are opened, raising the water level in the lower lock , and hence the
ship also. The ship then moves forward and the gates closed behind it.

This process is repeated until the ships arrive at the canal level

and commence their cross-country journey...By boat/ship! This process  is reversed at the Eastern end when the ships are returned to sea level.

The photograph was taken in August/September, which is the
time of year the heathers bloom, giving the purple haze to the hills in the background.

The bridge in the immediate foreground is a railway bridge, high
enough to afford clearance to the ships, whilst the road bridge is a swingbridge.
