Yellowstone

We were able to go to Yellowstone for only one day due to the road being closed by fire.  We looked at driving around but it was at least 3 hours each way to get there!

At Yellowstone we did the obligatory visits to Old Faithful, Upper and Lower Yellowstone Falls, and Yellowstone Lake.

The buffalo (Tessa tells me they're really bison) pretty much have the run of the park.  You can see a small herd in the upper left hand corner of the picture.  Lisa and the kids are in the foreground.

This old guy was hanging out by himself next to the old faithful lodge.  He appeared to have absolutely no interest in us (luckily).  Further around the park road we were stopped for about 15 minutes by a herd of buffalo that were blocking the road.  The rangers eventually came along and ran them off.  We got to see a buffalo stampede-- lots of dust and milling around.

We also got pretty close to a large elk but I haven't gotten that roll developed yet.

The most striking part of park was the fire damage from the fires 10 years ago.  It seems like most of park burned and dead trees, both standing and fallen are everywhere.  The new growth has only made it about 5-7 feet high.  It should recover and be more resistant to large scale fires than before.
