The Seaton Family of Yorkshire, Eng., and Oneida Co., NY

John Seaton was born around 1780, probably in the county of Yorkshire, England. He married Hannah Waterhouse, 23 Feb 1805, in Swinefleet, Parish of Whitgift. Hannah was baptized 28 Nov 1785, the daughter of George Waterhouse.

We have a list of children we believe to be John's. Their names and baptism dates are:

  1. John May 1809
  2. Hannah Oct 1811
  3. Racheal Jan 1818
  4. George 11 May 1820
  5. Ann 27 Oct 1822

  7. Joseph 4 Sept 1831
John and Hannah's household appeared on the 1841 census for the county of Yorkshire, Wapentake of Howdenshire, Parish of Eastrington and in the Bishop's Transcripts of the Chapelry of Swinefleet, Parish of Whitgift.

John's son, George Seaton, was born in March of 1820. When the 1841 census was taken, George was living and working on the farm of William Birks. Two years later, on 20 Feb 1843, George married Mary Ann Maw in the Parish of Sancton. A short time later, George and Mary Ann left for America from the port of Liverpool. Their names have not yet been found in any U.S. ships' passsengers lists and it is possible that they landed at a Canadian port.

According to the 1850 Federal Census, George and Mary Ann were living in the U.S. when their first child, Hannah, was born. Note that twins run in the family. George and Mary Ann's children were:

  1. Hannah Elizabeth b.1844

In 1854, George bought 116 35/100 acres in Annsville, Oneida Co., NY. This is probably the same farm that is shown on the 1858 map of Annsville on Glenmore Road north of the J. Collins farm. Later it appears on the 1873 map as the D. Collins farm and is now known as the Mitchell Place.

George was naturalized on 14 Sept 1858 in the NY Court of Common Pleas, Utica, Oneida Co., NY. Witnesses were James C. Donaldson of Utica and Joseph Dwyier of Deerfield.

George died in Annsville, NY, on 8 Jan 1880. He was predeceased by his children Hannah, Mary Ann Seaton Rougeot, Thomas; and twins, Francis and Frank. In his will, George directed his wife to pay his debts, his funeral expenses, and for a monument out of the estate. George's funeral notice was printed in the Rome Sentinel on 13 Jan 1880. He was buried in Taberg, NY. Mary Ann Maw died only two months later on 4 March 1880.

John James Seaton was born 20 Oct 1845 in Oneida Co., NY. He married Frances Elizabeth Stace 25 Apr 1869 in Taberg, NY. Frances was born 22 May 1850, the daughter of Robert Stace and Mercy A. Brewster. Their children were:
