																						Confederate Square, Rose Hill Cemetery Confederate Memorial Day Service Saturday, April 25, 1998
Rose Hill Cemetery was designed by Macon City Councilman Simri Rose in 1839. Confederate Square, located at the far east end of Rose Hill Cemetery, is the final resting place of approximately 600 Confederate soldiers. Some of these soldiers were from the Battle of Griswoldville, while others were reinterred from various plots around hospitals located in Macon. When the war ended, it was Mrs. Jane Lumsden Hardeman who led the effort to gather all the soldiers who had died in the hospitals scattered across Bibb county, and relocate them in Rose Hill.  Also, three Confederate generals are buried in Rose Hill: Philip Cook, Alfred Colquitt, and Edward Dorr Tracy. In adjacent Riverside Cemetery are the remains of a Confederate battery. Rose Hill was the scene of the first Confederate Memorial Day celebration in Macon, on April 26, 1866.
