Photo of Fred Representational painter of Western Landscapes, born in Texas in 1946, currently living in Orem, Utah.

"I try to create a romanticized version of what I see. I paint what I see, but add a little more. My interest right now is on large paintings of the canyons of Utah and Arizona. The more I paint and study the canyons, the more my paintings become like them in size and texture--large and rough. I suppose my style of painting falls somewhere between realism and impressionism. The works of Bierstadt, Church, and Moran have been my inspiration for landscape painting."

Denys was educated at the college of Southern Utah and Brigham Young University, but is largely a self-taught artist. Over the past 25 years he has been represented by galleries on the East and the West coast, along with galleries in the West. His paintings hang in collections nationwide, in Europe and Australia. He is listed in Who's Who in American Art, McGuire's Who's Who in the West, and International Who's Who in Art and Antiques.

Denys says that his hobbies include growing things and building things. He has a keen interest in cars, and currently owns a Maserati (1968 Ghibli), Jaguar (1964 XKE) and a Lotus (S-7). He is an ultra-marathon runner (races over 30 miles) and has run over 20 Ultras in the past 11 years, most of them 100 mile mountain races.

"In order to run a 100 mile foot race, up and down the mountains, I must run 3 to 4,000 miles a year in training; mostly in the mountains. In spending so much time running the land, I feel I am a part of it. I see different things every time I run, and I think this has helped me become a better landscape painter."
