Overview of the Falklands War

Slide 44

The war over the Falkland Islands was unfortunate due to its cost in human life but the Argentine government started it. This same government waged an inhumane war against its own citizens which resulted in thousands of people being 'disappeared'. While there may be some doubt about the original ownership of the Falkland Islands, there is no doubt about South Georgia which has always been an uncontested British possesion. The Argentines were the authors of there own misfortune when they thought they could get away with it. On paper a dug in division should have been able to defeat anything up to a Corp in strength. Who would have thought that the British would assemble a fleet and sail 8,000km to land an under strength ad hoc division(without air superiority or heavy equipment) and retake the islands? It was a feat of arms unparallelled in the history of modern warfare.
