A BRIEF HISTORY:

The Floral Park Fire Department Rescue Squad was organized in 1929 under the guidance of Arthur J. Ennis, acting Warden at the time.  The original squad consisted of 18 men whose highest training was the Advanced Red Cross First Aid course offered at that time.  As the squad grew, so did its influence and it has grown into the well outfitted Rescue Company of today's Department.

According to Ex-Chief Robert Meehan, the first rescue truck owned by the Department was built by Mack and covered over in canvas.  The truck carried all purpose masks, oxygen, inhalators, first aid supplies, and a special kit to be used by doctors with various tools and supplies.  In the early years, among the doctors who frequently assisted the Rescue Company was the late Dr. Irving Kossack, to whom 122-A was dedicated.  Dr. Kossack bears the distinction of being the only civilian to receive honorary member status.

Associate member Joseph Riedman who was appointed to the Rescue Company in 1942 prior to his passing, recalled that the members of the Company at that time represented all trades: carpenters, plumbers, electricians, painters, ceiling installers, telephone technicians, and a male nurse.  To this day, dedicated daytime Rescue membership is difficult, but Floral Park remains one of the few remaining Primary Call Rescue Companies in Nassau County.

In the late seventies the Department put an advanced life support ambulance into service. Our newest ambulance, a 2000 Braun Ford E-350,  was dedicated on March 29, 2001.

In the forties our slogan was "We do the difficult immediately, the impossible takes a little longer".   In the eighties our slogan became "Forever vigilant, always prepared".  Today, our monikers are
"Floral Park's Busiest" and "Rescue in the New Millenium ... Renewed and Ready."   Either way, the Floral Park Fire Department Rescue Company always has been and always will be one of the finest heavy rescue companies on Long Island.
