The IGI file of the LDS Family History Center shows Frederic Brookes
Thurtell was christened October 10, 1813, in Pakefield, Suffolk, England,
and lists John Thurtell and Mary as his parents.

A letter dated October 29, 1997, from Yvonne Ruff of New South Wales,
Australia, stated she visited the grave of Frederick Brooks Thurtell in
Morpeth. His headstone showed, "Fred was a good bloke. Buried by his
work mates." She also provided a copy of his burial registration,
Application P 11406/83 SM, Number 1378, Volume 25. This shows Frederick
Thurtell, whose abode was Morpeth, age 27, occupation storekeeper, died
May 17, 1841, and was buried May 20, 1841. The ceremony was performed at
the Parish of Maitland in the County of Northumberland, New South Wales,
by the Reverend W. Stack.

The Thurtells in Australia are primarily descended from a James Thurtell,
born in 1811 in Norwich, Norfolk, England, who was sentenced to seven
years in Australia for stealing shoes. This was reported in the Norfolk
Chronicle Number 3074, Saturday, May 2, 1829. His case was heard at
Norwich City Sessions before the Mayor Thomas Thurtell Esq. and a full
attendance of magistrates. Some of the Australian Thurtells think that
this James could have been a brother of Frederick, but no one knows. He
sailed from Scotland on the Katherine Stewart Forbes on March 9, 1829,
and arrived in Australia on February 19, 1830. He was 5 feet 4 inches
tall, with a ruddy complexion, light brown hair, grey eyes, and the point
of the right fourth finger missing. He was Protestant and could read and
write. He was single and had worked as a gardener or baker's apprentice
before sailing. He married Maria Jane Culverson in the Parish of
Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia, on September 22, 1841.
