A Fire Fighter's Pledge

I promise concern for others. A willingness to help all those in need.
I promise courage - courage to face and conquer my fears. Courage to share and endure the ordeal of those who need me.
I promise strength - strength of heart to bear whatever burdens might be placed upon me. Strength of body to deliver to safety all those placed within my care.
I promise the wisdom to lead, the compassion to comfort, and the love to serve unselfishly whenever I am called.

After being in law enforcement, fire and EMS for over 20 years, I have had more than my share of 911 abuse. 911 is for REAL life and death emergencies. Fires, serious medical emergencies, vehicle accidents with injuries, these are good examples of real emergencies. Please do not use your 911 number to check on the weather, get the correct time or to report non-emergency incidents. Dialing 911 to ask about hurricane information is a big no-no, yet I can bet I personally handled about 200 calls during a hurricane in 1985 - all of which wanted to know where the storm was. Tying those precious lines up made a cardiac patient wait an extra 5 minutes for help. Enough said.

Another abuse which doesn't get addressed and NEEDS to is that even though most areas have what is called Enhanced 911 (E-911) and knows your address when you call in, dispatchers need more than that. STAY on the line and answer ALL questions. Stay calm, panic only leads to delays. Hang up only after the dispatcher tells you it's alright.

And finally, from the viewpoint of those of us looking for your address, keep in mind that white house numbers on a white house do not show up well, especially at night. Turn on an outside porch light, describe your vehicles to the dispatcher. Nothing is more frustrating to go down a long, dark road and have 15 houses in a row with no numbers, no lights. If you are very hard to find and have someone else there with you, send them out to flag the unit down. This can save valuable minutes during a real emergency.

No one can ever say enough about drinking and driving. You can bet after 21 years of public safety, I have seen more than I care to of this. Party responsibly, have someone else drive you if needed and never, ever allow someone you know to drive drunk. Your friends might be mad at you if you take their keys away but YOU might not be able to handle the emotional turmoil if you let a friend drive drunk and they hurt or kill someone.

This site ALWAYS under construction - check back often

This No Fear attitude is carried about by firefighters around the world but in a serious tone, children need to know not to be afraid of us if they are trapped in a house fire. Children and some adults have been found hiding under beds and in closets - not from fear of the fire so much as the fear of a strange creature coming out of the smoke! We wear face masks connected to air bottles which make strange noises. Add this to the low visibility in a house fire and you can see how kids can get frightened and actually run away from us. As firefighters, we try to teach school age children NOT to do this and show them what we look like when we wear all of our gear. Parents, please discuss this with your children. Most already know Stop, Drop and Roll but many still will run from a Darth Vader sounding "monster" who is really just trying to save them!! Parents, please visit the kid's page with your children. Aside from alot of fun activities and links, there is valuable, life saving information. Some of it your children already know but it won't hurt to go over it together!!
