Return to donkeys
Home
'Keysoe Simon' is a good looking ,slender,  black gelding of 12hh, born on 7 April 1996. He weighs approx. 260kg. He is broken to saddle, harness, packing & farm work.

Both of Simon's  parents were wild, 'feral' donkeys. His mother now registered as 'Yarrambat Stella', was caught near Tibooburra in South Australia and was sold at auction in Echuca Victoria. This wild background shows in his protective attitude while he is eating or drinking. He has a swift double-barrel volley of kicks if another donkey comes too close! However he is also  insistent on getting human cuddles, and will wriggle in under another donkey's neck to insert himself in the favoured position.

Simon has a lively, spirited nature & usually gives a cheery bray when we come into sight. He loves to rush up to the gate for attention. Peversely, he sometimes plays hard to approach in a game of catch-me-if-you-can.

Although Simon is not as relaxed as the other donkeys, he doesn't blink at a laden log truck, gravel truck or school bus passing us on a narrow road.
Trained by Ruth Walker of Keysoe Stud, Simon is a beaut ride. He is game to try anything, responsive, fast and eager though somewhat excitable. He is my favourite riding mount & harness choice. Simon is the donkey I usually take to harness club meetings as he has absolutely no trouble keeping up with the horses & ponies. For all his dash, Simon stands like a rock while having his hooves done.

Increasingly, we use Simon around the property. He is not quite as strong as
Kate, but drops down into the collar to pull hard and determinedly. Simon has worked both in public and at home with the sled, harrows, plough and scoop.

In the paddock, Simon is best friends with
Tessa and Cajun. He likes to graze or snooze with Tessa, and mock-fights with Cajun. he will also share nibbles with Cajun, Kate and visiting jenny Franny.
