September 12, 2001 Great North American Rendezvous, Ft Loudon, Fort Area Meet at 9:45 a.m. Off Rt. 30. Becky Gerlach has arranged tour guides for us for the morning. Witness American History Come to Life and the everyday life of our Forefathers from 150-200 years ago.. See how they survived day to day, what they ate, where they slept, what they wore, the tools they used, the games they played and the things they discovered. Admission is $3.00-adults, $0.50 for students. If you cannot attend on Wednesday, it is open to the public on September 8 & 9 from 9-5. Topics for the day include song bird identification, songbird migration, bird nests and a bird walk around the park. Please meet at the Brightbill Interpretive Center/ Visitor Center, pack a lunch for your child and dress for the outdoors. If you have binoculars, please bring them. September 27, 2001 SAFETY NIGHT and kick off for FAYETTEVILLE FUN NIGHTS at Fayetteville Elementary School, Main St., Fayetteville. The Fayetteville Fire Company will be presenting a presentation on fire saftey and first aid. October 3, 2001 HOMESCHOOL EXCELLENCE DAY The 7th annual celebration of home education in Pennsylvania. Project Fair for students to enter projects in Science, Art, and History. Project entry information is in the PA Homeschool Newsletter or at www.pahomeschoolers.com Projects are to be set up from 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. Tour through the capitol and visit your representatives office with an information sheet on homeschooling provided by PA Homeschoolers. At 1:00 p.m. there will be a rally in the rotunda for all homeschoolers and the winners of the fair will be announced and after you can peruse the projects until 3:00 p.m.

October 5, 2001 "As You Like It" by Shakespeare performed at Wilson College. Students are free with an adult chaperone. Jeanne Clark is paying the $10.00 adult fee and is willing to take up to 15 well-behaved students with her. Call her (263-5298) by September 21, 2001 to reserve a space for your child.

October 8, 2001 NATIONAL CIVIL WAR MUSEUM, Harrisburg The only museum to portray both sides of the Civil War in an equally balanced and humanistic presentation. The National Civil War Museum incorporates high-resolution digital videos, sound and light shows, and life-like mannequins in dramatic and emotional presentations. These varied audio-visual presentations are an integral part of the Museum's exhibits that are sure to keep your students attention. School Group Rate: $4.50 for students. One adult for every five students enters free. Additional adults are $5.50. We will divide the cost amongst the adults. Meet at Chambersburg Mall Parking Lot at 8:30 a.m. to carpool or meet at Museum at 9:45 a.m. for a 10:00 a.m. entrance time! (Directions: From Interstate 81, Take North Progress Avenue Exit., Progress Avenue South to Walnut Street (US Route 22)., Turn right on Walnut Street (US Route 22 West) and follow towards downtown 2.5 miles to the Parkside Cafe. (Where Route 22 bears right, stay on Walnut), Turn left at the Parkside Cafe into the entrance to Reservoir Park and proceed up the hill to the parking area. October 12, 2001 Cowan's Gap Homeschool Program Hawk Watch This program is for all age homeschool children. Adult Supervision Required. We will begin the day at the Brightbill Interpretive Center/Visitor Center with basic identification of hawks and eagles followed by the rest of the morning viewing migrating hawks at the Pulpit (located 15 minutes from the Park) Parents are to transport their children up the Pulpit. Please dress warmly and you may wish to bring a blanket and binoculars. For more details and to register your child, please call the park office at (717) 485-3948.

October 31, 2001 KING's GAP ENVIRONMENAL EDUCATION & TRAINING CENTER 9:30 a.m. -1:30 p.m. (bring sack lunch) Come this beautiful fall day to this gorgeous state park (especially in the fall). Former presidents as a retreat used the mansion that is now the park office. The view from the mansion porch is breathtaking. There will be two programs for our students, one in the morning and one after lunch. For Grades 3-5 Animal Adaptations (Students examine adaptations of animals from forest, field and aquatic habitats to discover how adaptations help the animals where they live.) & Natural Community Profiles (Students determine the plant and animal members of a forest community and compare the forest community and how they work together) For Grades 6th and up Animal Adaptations (same description as above but activities for older students) and Exploring Freshwater Communities (Students discover the inhabitants of pond or stream, aquatic animal adaptations, construct food chains and food webs and determine the quality of water investigated.) Directions to King's Gap: I-81 to exit 37 (old exit 11) Newville, turn right onto Rt. 233 south. Go through the Rt. 174 intersection, over a small creek, and over the RR tracks. The next intersection is Pine Rd., turn left onto Pine Rd. Go approximately 2.5 miles, turn right into Kings Gap Road. BUT I DON"T KNOW HOW TO SKI AND NEITHER DO MY CHILDREN Then you need to go to Whitetails Learn to Ski Day on January 3, 2002. Many homeschoolers have learned to ski with this program. See January 3, 2002 for detail below!

November 12, 2001 BUS TRIP TO THE SMITHSONIAN Leave the K-Mart Parking Lot on Wayne Ave. at 7:30 a.m. and return at 5:00 p.m. (approximately - we will be leaving Washington at 3:00 p.m.) Cost of bus per person is $5.50. The Smithsonian Museums are free. Bring sack lunch or there is a cafeteria at the Air and Space Museum. January 3, 2002 Learn to SKI Day at Whitetail. You receive a lesson, rental and lift pass for beginner hills for a $10.00 donation to Multiple Sclerosis, pre-registration is necessary. The spots fill up sometime in November, so call soon. Call Dianne at Whitetail 328-9400, ext. 3535

January 14, 2002 Bus Trip to Tour the White House and Capitol. Bill Shuster's Office is arranging these tours for us. Tours are free. Limit: 50 people. Bus Trip Cost: $5.50 per person. Meet at K-Mart Parking Lot at 7:15 a.m. Our tour of the White House is at 9:45 a.m. so we need to arrive on time. Bring a lunch that can be kept in the bus and eaten between White House and Capitol. Capitol Tour is at 1:00 p.m. If there is time between we will stop at the Washington Monument. March 22, 23, 24, 2002 Franklin Science and Technology Fair at the Chambersburg Area Middle School. This fair is open to all public, private and homeschooled students in grade K-12 who live in Franklin County. Students set up their projects for judging from 4-6 p.m. on Friday evening. For science fair ideas, rules and regulations and to register online go to: www.wasd.k12.pa.us/schools/ScienceFair/sciencefair.htm Or send a self addresses stamped envelope for a registration form to Mary Ellen Moore 1853 Dawn Lane, Chambersburg, PA 17201 Hands-on Science Contests on Saturday. More details later! Even if you do not enter a project or one of the Saturday contests, come Saturday from Noon until 5:00p.m. and see over five hundred science projects. Just observing is a science experience in itself!

April 1, 2002 OLD BEDFORD VILLAGE Hands-on Program, Meet at Chambersburg Mall Parking Lot at 8:00 a.m. or meet at the Village at 9:45 a.m. Students: $4.50 per student. Parents are free. Students will be making a pioneer craft. One craft for younger students and one for the older. They will decide sometime after the first of the year which crafts will be completed that day. (available crafts are: corn husk bookmarks, dipped candles, tin Punch, basket weaving, leather works, etc.) Schedule of Events: 10:00-1020 a.m. Orientation and Welcome 10:30-11:30 a.m. Craft Workshop, 11:30-12:30 Lunch, 12:30-1:30 p.m. Tour of Buildings, our guides will narrate the history of the buildings and teach us about how people lived from 1750 - 1899. Amy Lyman of Shippensburg is teaching beginning violin and all levels of cello to all ages. She will start as young as three years old. Her fee is $40.00 per month which includes three 1/2 hour private lessons and one 45 minute group lesson. The time slots currently avaiable are Tuesday mornings at 8:45, 9:15, and 10:45. WALDEN BOOKS AND BORDERS BOOKS both have a discount program for homeschoolers. You need to bring you letter from the school district to show you are a valid homeschoolers and you will receive a discount card.

Monthly Homeschool Skating-The Hewitt family, a homeschooling family in Roxbury, invites all homeschoolers to roller skate this year. Come to the Roxbury Skating Rink. Pay only $1.00 for skates. First Wednesday of each month from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Directions: 997 to Roxbury. Turn left go 1 mile to rink on left. Call Kathy-530-5281 for more information.
