Maude Findlay an independent, liberal and outspoken woman lives in Tuckahoe, New York with her fourth husband Walter Findlay, proud owner of Findlay's Friendly Appliances. Also residing at the Findlay residence is Maude's divorced and only daughter, Carol Traynor, and eight-year-old grandson, Phillip.

Together the Findlays face many issues, a few being, Maude's abortion in November 1972, her face-lift in October 1973, and hysterectomy in 1974, as well as Walter's alcoholism in September 1973 and bankruptcy in October 1976.

Widower Dr. Arthur Harmon, Walter's best friend of many years, is the Findlays next neighbor. On January 29, 1974, Arthur marries Vivian Cavender, Maude's best friend of many years and the couples remain close friends and neighbors.

Maude hires three different maids between 1972 and 1977. First being Florida Evans, a blunt and straight to the point, black woman. Florida was hired on September 26, 1972 and quits on February 5, 1974. Seven months later Maude hires Mrs. Nell Naugatuck, a boozing, blunt, British woman on September 30, 1974. When Mrs. Naugatuck quits on March 28, 1977, Maude then hires Victoria Butterfield, a St. Norman heritage, black woman on April 4, 1977.
