What's the Story, Mornin' Glory?

Eye 2

The Eye 2
Jian Gui 2

(2004)

After a shopping spree Joey Cheng (Qi Shu) checks into her hotel room and tries to kill herself by swallowing a bunch of pills. When she wakes up she begins to throw up and sees her bed surrounded by people and promptly falls back asleep. In the morning her wake up call discovers her body and rushes her to the hospital where her stomach is pumped. She regrets trying to kill herself and returns to Hong Kong and tries to get over her break-up with her boyfriend Sam (Jesdaporn Pholdee) in a normal way. However, she soon discovers that she's pregnant with Sam's baby. Joey wants to get an abortion, but her doctor advises against it since she's had an abortion before. She makes the appointment for the abortion anyway. A few days later she is chloroformed and drug out into an abandoned construction site where a man tries to rape her. When she wakes up she's in a police station and the man who tried to rape her has been horribly disfigured by multiple bites to the face. She's not charged because witnesses say that she was screaming “don't hurt my baby” and it was obvious self defense. Joey decides to keep the baby, but she's realizes that some of the people she's met aren't actually there, or at least no one else can see them. She's also being stalked by a ghostly woman who Joey believes is trying to kill her baby.

If at first you don't succeed in killing yourself, try, try again.

Joey: Have you ever had any suicides at this station?"
Worker: Ma'am, I just started working here and I don't think I have to answer your question.

Survey SAYS...

The Eye 2 started out good and actually pretty creepy, but it lost a lot of steam less than halfway through. This flick had a lot of potential, but it seemed to get more wrapped up in how Joey felt about being pregnant and whether or not she was going to keep the baby and why her boyfriend left her (or she left him, I'm not sure). Then there was the side thing where that guy tries to rape her and it kind of seemed to have little to do with the story in general. Since this movie had the title The Eye 2 I was expecting it to be a little more like The Eye. Not necessarily story wise, but the same overall creepiness that the first movie held and whatnot. The movie in general was rather boring. The beginning and the very, very end was good and interesting, but the rest of the story drug a lot. Especially when they explain what the ghosts are doing, it's not even remotely scary and it's even understandable. Joey seems to be overreacting to everything once you find out what's going on. The director even admits that in The Eye 2 they wanted to focus more on the story and less on thrilling the audience, however, people like myself don't see these movies for the excellent story, but to be thrilled. Really, they shouldn't have kept the name “The Eye” because automatically people are going to assume that since it's a sequel then it'll be similar. The story itself was a new and refreshing idea. This is always nice since these days all the movies are the same or worse, a remake. Speaking of which, they're going do a remake of The Eye featuring Renee Zellweger. How is that even going to be good? Why can't American filmmakers come up with their own ideas? Dark Water, The Ring, The Ring 2, The Grudge...c'mon now! None of these movies needed to be remade for the American audience. With the exception of The Ring, every remake has sucked balls. What I like about foreign horror movies is the fact that they aren't predictable (boring maybe). I don't know if it's the fact that most of my attention is being focused on the story and the subtitles or if it's because I've not noticed a formula in their movies yet. I also like that you can't tell if they're bad actors or not. Haha.

On a side note, why would they give a woman responsibility of a child when she tries to kill herself by throwing herself from a building and when she doesn't die she drags herself up the hospital stairs and tries again. It was hilarious when the nurses say "now that your arms have healed, do you want to hold and feed your baby now?" The very last scene was kind of stupid because they explained what the ghosts were doing and it's not scary, but they try to give you one last chill at the end of the movie, which was pointless knowing what they want. The movie as a whole was a good movie with a good story, but it really fell short as soon as it started focusing more on the pregnancy and whatnot then on the creepiness of having ghosts follow you around. It really could've been so much better. I'm sure I have about 5 more "Eye" movies to look forward to, maybe one of those will be better. So, if you like a lot of vomiting, falling corpses, ghosts who want to know what time it is, multiple unsuccessful suicides, water breaking, and floating into wombs, then this is the flick for you. As for us, we give The Eye 2
